Before launch, however, a report suggested the S25 Ultra could top $1,400 if Samsung passed along the alleged higher cost of its new Qualcomm processor. That was a forecast, not a confirmed Samsung price.
What the original S25 Ultra price rumor said
A November 20, 2024 report said the Galaxy S25 Ultra could cost more than $100 above the S24 Ultra in some markets. Its central argument was that the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy might cost 25–30% more than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in the previous model. Applying that alleged increase to a $1,299.99 U.S. starting price suggested a price above $1,400 if Samsung passed the added chip cost directly to buyers. The report presented that as a possibility, not as a leaked final price or an announcement from Samsung or Qualcomm.
Samsung announced the S25 series on January 22, 2025. The U.S. launch price showed that the forecast did not come to pass: the S25 Ultra’s 256GB model started at $1,299.99. Samsung’s announcement and its U.S. price listings establish the launch outcome.
Why analysts expected the phone to cost more
A new flagship processor
The S25 Ultra moved to the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy from the S24 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. Samsung’s S25 series specification sheet confirms the new platform. A newer flagship chip, designed for higher performance and more demanding on-device workloads, can put pressure on a manufacturer’s component costs. Generative AI, gaming, ray tracing and other processing demands were part of the performance context for this generation; they do not, by themselves, establish a particular retail-price increase.

- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
After launch, Counterpoint estimated that the S25 Ultra’s processor cost was about 21% higher than the comparable component in the S24 Ultra. That supports the general direction of the pre-launch concern, but it is a separate estimate and does not verify the earlier report’s alleged 25–30% figure. Counterpoint’s analysis concerns estimated component costs, not a price Samsung disclosed.
Other hardware changes
The S25 Ultra also introduced a 50MP ultrawide camera, Gorilla Armor 2 cover material and a slightly larger 6.9-inch display, while retaining a 200MP main camera, titanium construction and S Pen support. Samsung lists these features in its S25 series overview. New or revised parts can add engineering, testing or component costs, but a feature list alone cannot show how much any one change added to the phone’s total cost.
Why higher component costs did not mean a higher U.S. MSRP
Counterpoint’s later estimate put the total bill of materials (BOM)—the estimated cost of the phone’s physical components—for the 12GB/512GB S25 Ultra at 3.4% above the comparable S24 Ultra. In the same analysis, the processor was estimated to cost about 21% more, while the titanium middle frame was about 8% less costly and the display cost declined by a single-digit percentage. These are Counterpoint estimates for the specified configuration, not Samsung’s published accounts or a complete measure of the cost to make, sell or support a phone.

A BOM is not a retail-price formula. It does not capture the full cost structure behind a handset or determine Samsung’s desired margin. Retail pricing can also reflect research and development, software, labor and testing, distribution, marketing, retailer and carrier margins, warranty service, taxes, currency conditions, trade-in subsidies and promotional budgets. Consequently, a 3.4% estimated BOM increase does not imply a 3.4% retail-price increase.

The available evidence shows that component-cost pressure did not translate into a higher U.S. starting MSRP. It does not establish exactly how Samsung balanced costs, margins and its pricing strategy. Maintaining the familiar Ultra price point may have been a commercial choice, but Samsung has not publicly identified that as the reason.

Promotions can change the price you actually pay
MSRP is a useful baseline, but it is not necessarily the transaction price. Samsung and retailers may offer discounts, trade-in credits or storage upgrades; those offers vary by date, configuration, color, stock, retailer and eligibility. Samsung’s buying pages have displayed discounts on some configurations, while launch promotions included storage upgrades and credits. Neither kind of offer changes the comparison of the two models’ launch MSRPs.

Is the S25 Ultra a worthwhile upgrade from the S24 Ultra?
With launch prices unchanged for the 256GB and 512GB U.S. models, the choice comes down less to the rumored price hike and more to the specific improvements, trade-offs and deal available to you. Samsung’s specifications establish hardware differences, but they cannot by themselves prove which phone takes better pictures, lasts longer on a charge or feels faster in everyday use.
Reasons to choose the S25 Ultra
- You want the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy platform.
- You value the move from a 12MP to a 50MP ultrawide camera.
- You prefer the newer design, Gorilla Armor 2 or 6.9-inch display.
- You expect to keep the phone for years and want the newer launch generation; Samsung’s S25 specification sheet lists seven years of OS and security updates.
- A trade-in or other eligible offer makes its effective cost competitive with the S24 Ultra.
Reasons to keep or buy the S24 Ultra
- You can find it at a substantial discount and do not need the S25 Ultra’s newer processor or 50MP ultrawide.
- You use S Pen remote controls. The S25 Ultra retains S Pen support, but its pen lacks Bluetooth functionality and therefore does not support the S24 Ultra’s Bluetooth-dependent Air Actions.
- You prefer the S24 Ultra’s design or already own one and its performance and camera features meet your needs.
The S24 Ultra also has a 200MP main camera, a 5,000mAh battery, titanium construction, S Pen support and a QHD+ 120Hz display, according to Samsung’s S24 series specification sheet. A specification comparison is not a substitute for independent testing when judging camera quality, battery life or real-world performance.
