Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Verdict: The Galaxy S24 Ultra really was advertised with up to $870 in combined promotional value, but it was a limited Samsung pre-order offer reported on January 29, 2024—not an unconditional $870 price cut. The maximum required a qualifying trade-in and counted a free storage upgrade as part of the savings. The promotion has expired.
What the $870 headline actually meant
Droid Life reported the offer as a final opportunity before Galaxy S24 pre-orders ended. It covered the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S24+, while the regular Galaxy S24 was advertised at up to $610 in savings. The original report is available at Droid Life.
Samsung did not permanently reduce every S24 Ultra by $870. The headline combined two different benefits:
| Promotion component | Maximum value |
|---|---|
| Eligible-device trade-in credit | $750 |
| 256GB-to-512GB storage upgrade | $120 |
| Advertised product-value savings | $870 |
The $120 was the value of receiving the 512GB phone for the 256GB model’s price. It was not cash, a refund or a rebate. Its usefulness depended on whether the buyer wanted the additional storage.
#1 Best Overall
- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
How the effective $549 price was calculated
The same report said the S24 Ultra could cost as little as $549 after the maximum trade-in credit, with up to $150 in accessory credit. That was a best-case, after-trade-in calculation, not the amount every customer paid.
- A shopper without an eligible trade-in would not receive the full $750 reduction.
- The buyer had to surrender a qualifying phone that passed the promotion’s inspection rules.
- The storage benefit reduced the price of a higher-capacity model rather than returning money.
- Accessory credit could be spent only on eligible Samsung products and was not cash.
Which phones qualified for the maximum trade-in?
These were examples of the January 2024 promotional values reported at the time:
| Trade-in example | Reported maximum credit |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S23 Ultra | Up to $750 |
| Galaxy Z Fold5 | Up to $750 |
| Galaxy S22 Ultra | Up to $650 |
| Galaxy S23+ | Up to $650 |
Those figures were specific to that launch promotion and should not be treated as current quotes. Samsung says eligible models and values can change; its current terms also require the device to meet ownership, lock-status, condition and submission rules. See Samsung’s trade-in program.

What the $150 accessory benefit covered
The S24 Ultra promotion reportedly included up to $100 in standard pre-order credit plus an additional $50 reservation or promotional bonus, for up to $150 total. The credit could be used for qualifying products such as cases, earbuds or a Galaxy Watch. The extra $50 depended on using the applicable reservation or promotional link, so it was not an automatic cash payment for every buyer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBest Buy’s historical offer used gift cards rather than Samsung accessory credit. The report said Best Buy also matched the free storage upgrade and top trade-in values, with gift cards worth up to $150. That was part of the January 2024 launch promotion, not proof of a current offer.
Trade-in conditions that could reduce or reverse the credit
Samsung’s current trade-in terms illustrate the practical risks that matter when evaluating a headline discount:
Rank #3
- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
- The phone must power on and function normally.
- It must be reset to factory settings, with personal information removed.
- Software locks must be disabled, and the device must not be blacklisted.
- The customer must own the phone; leased devices are generally ineligible.
- The screen, camera lenses, body and other components must meet the stated condition requirements, subject to any listed cracked-screen exception.
- Samsung generally requires the trade-in to be shipped within 15 days of receiving the qualifying purchase.
If the phone arrives late or fails inspection, Samsung’s terms allow it to charge back some or all of the anticipated credit. The exact rules for the 2024 promotion came from that offer’s terms, so they should not be assumed identical in every detail to today’s program.
Why “up to $870 off” was easy to misunderstand
It depended on a high-value trade-in
The largest portion of the headline was not a markdown available to owners of any phone. It required a specific eligible model in acceptable condition. Giving up a recent flagship also has an opportunity cost: compare Samsung’s credit with a realistic private-sale price after fees, shipping, fraud risk and the time required to find a buyer.
Storage value is not the same as cash savings
The $120 figure reflected Samsung’s then-current price difference between 256GB and 512GB configurations. Colors, retailers and later refurbished listings can use different storage pricing. A buyer who would have chosen 256GB may not value the upgrade at its full face amount.
Rank #4
- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
Accessory credit may be worth less than its face value
The $150 only delivered full value to someone who planned to buy eligible Samsung accessories before the credit expired. It should not be added to the $870 unless describing the broader promotional package; the headline’s product-value calculation was $750 plus $120.

No. The January 2024 pre-order window is over. Samsung’s current trade-in page promotes newer devices, including up to $720 in instant credit toward a Galaxy S26 Ultra, rather than repeating the S24 Ultra launch promotion: Samsung trade-in.
The S24 Ultra can still appear through refurbished channels, but that is a different comparison from a new-phone launch deal:

When the original promotion made sense
- You already owned a phone that qualified for the maximum credit.
- You wanted 512GB storage and could use Samsung accessories.
- You accepted inspection and possible chargeback risk.
- You were buying during the January 2024 pre-order period.
It was less compelling for owners of damaged, locked, leased or blacklisted phones; buyers who did not need 512GB; or shoppers comparing against a substantially cheaper refurbished S24 Ultra. Anyone choosing a refurbished model should also compare warranty, battery condition, storage, carrier status and remaining software-support runway with a newer Galaxy phone.
The Bottom Line
The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s “$870 off” claim was legitimate only as a limited January 2024 promotion: up to $750 in qualifying trade-in credit plus a $120 512GB upgrade. The maximum effective price was reported as $549 after trade-in, with separate accessory credit. It was never a universal cash discount and is not a current August 2026 offer.
