On June 1, 2018, MZ announced that co-founder Gabe Leydon was leaving the CEO role to focus on Satori, the company’s real-time messaging technology, and its potential use with blockchain. MZ’s board named then-COO Kristen Dumont CEO and appointed games CTO Vincenzo Alagna president of games.
Why did Gabe Leydon leave MZ?
Leydon said he wanted to focus on Satori and what it could do alongside blockchain technology. In MZ’s announcement, he described his interest in the real-time technology developed through the company’s games and smart-cities platform, saying: “My passion has always been in the realtime technology that we’ve developed through MZ’s games and smart cities platform. I’m excited to focus on what Satori can do when paired with blockchain technology.” GamesBeat reported the transition and Leydon’s crypto focus; the company announcement described Satori as a standalone business focus.
That was the rationale given at the time. The announcement does not establish whether the planned standalone Satori business or blockchain work was ultimately completed.
Who took over MZ’s leadership?
| Person | Role after the transition | Responsibility or background stated at the time |
|---|---|---|
| Kristen Dumont | CEO | MZ’s COO since 2015; she was to lead the core games business. |
| Vincenzo Alagna | President of games | MZ’s games CTO before the appointment. |
| Gabe Leydon | Focused on Satori | Co-founder and outgoing CEO; his stated focus was tokenizing Satori as a standalone business. |
Dumont said in the company announcement: “One of MZ’s core strengths is our ability to transform and innovate, and this transition will be no different.”

What was at stake for MZ’s games business?
GamesBeat identified Game of War: Fire Age, Mobile Strike and Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire as MZ titles. It reported that the games had generated $4.5 billion on iOS and Android since 2014, attributing the figure to measurement firm Sensor Tower. That figure is GamesBeat’s 2018 report of Sensor Tower’s measurement, rather than a figure independently confirmed here. GamesBeat also reported that the titles had recently been slipping on top-grossing charts they had once dominated.

The announcement documents a leadership change and the company’s stated division of focus: Dumont leading MZ’s games business, Alagna overseeing games as president, and Leydon turning to Satori. It is historical reporting, not evidence of the people’s current roles or of Satori’s later status.
