That loss is a historical 2025 figure, not a description of Funko’s current financial performance.
Who is Funko’s new CEO?
Josh Simon became Funko’s chief executive officer on September 1, 2025, and joined the company’s board that day. He succeeded interim CEO Mike Lunsford, who served through August 31 and remained a director. Funko announced the appointment on August 12; its SEC filing documents the board action and effective date.

Funko chairman Charles Denson said Simon’s experience in entertainment and consumer products suited the role. Simon said he was honored to join the company. Those statements describe the rationale and reaction at the time; they do not establish that the appointment itself would reverse Funko’s financial results.
What did Josh Simon do at Netflix?
Simon worked at Netflix from March 2020 through August 2025, most recently as vice president of consumer products. Funko said he oversaw global merchandise, live experiences, and the Roald Dahl Story Company. His work included developing Netflix’s first e-commerce platform for consumer products, managing retail relationships, and overseeing more than 40 experiences across 300 cities.

Before Netflix, Simon held senior positions at Nike from 2015 to 2020 and worked at Disney from 2000 to 2006, according to Funko’s SEC filing. Funko also cited his work at Color Force Productions, a production company based at DreamWorks.
Why was Funko reporting a loss when it named a new CEO?
The roughly $41 million figure refers to Funko’s second quarter of 2025. GeekWire characterized the preceding quarterly loss as approximately $41 million in its August 13, 2025, report on Simon’s appointment. The same report said Funko had lost $61 million in the first six months of 2025, attributing that six-month comparison to the Daily Herald.

The timing places the leadership change amid financial pressure, but it does not show that the loss caused the appointment or establish what Simon’s strategy would be. The company announcement and filing document the appointment and Simon’s background, not a specific turnaround plan.
What do Funko’s later results show?
In its August 6, 2026 results release, Funko reported second-quarter net sales of $207.7 million, up 7% from $193.5 million a year earlier. It reported net income of $15.4 million, compared with a $40.5 million loss in the prior-year quarter, and adjusted EBITDA of $40.9 million, versus negative $16.5 million.

Those comparisons need an important qualification: Funko said gross margin, net income, adjusted net income, and adjusted EBITDA each included a $25.4 million pretax benefit related to recognizing expected tariff refunds and releasing accrued tariffs. The reported profit and adjusted measures therefore include that benefit; they should not be read as if it were absent.
The same 2026 release reiterated full-year net-sales guidance of flat to up 3% and raised adjusted EBITDA guidance. Those are company forecasts, not realized full-year results.

What the appointment means for Funko investors and fans
Simon’s résumé connects consumer-product licensing, retail, and live experiences—areas relevant to a company known for physical collectibles such as Pop! vinyl figures. But an executive’s prior experience is not a guarantee of future sales, profits, or stock performance. The useful distinction is between the 2025 snapshot that accompanied his appointment and the later reported results, which include a material tariff-related benefit.
For anyone assessing the company, compare like with like: quarterly sales with quarterly sales, net income with net income, and adjusted measures with their stated adjustments. Separate reported results from guidance, and note one-off or unusual items that materially affect a period.
