FuelCell Energy and infrastructure investor and operator Sustainable Development Capital LLP (SDCL) have identified up to 450 megawatts of potential fuel-cell projects for data centers and other mission-critical power needs. That figure is a development opportunity under a letter of intent—not 450 MW already contracted, under construction, or operating. Each project still needs to reach a final investment decision.

What the 450 MW plan is

Announced on January 20, 2026, the collaboration is an agreement to explore deploying FuelCell Energy systems for data centers and other mission-critical distributed-power uses around the world. The companies describe the opportunity as up to 450 MW of identified projects. They have not publicly listed the sites or specified how much capacity belongs to each one.

FuelCell Energy brings its fuel-cell technology and experience designing, manufacturing, developing, installing, operating, and maintaining megawatt-scale systems. SDCL is the financing and infrastructure operating partner. The announcement describes a potential project pipeline, not a completed financing or a disclosed customer contract.

How mature are the projects?

The key distinction is between identifying a project and committing to build it. In a February 11, 2026 company Q&A, FuelCell Energy President and CEO Jason Few said the LOI outlines 450 MW of identified projects and that they need to move to final investment decisions (FIDs). He added that some are on short timelines while others are in progress.

Stage What is established for the SDCL opportunity
Identified opportunity Up to 450 MW under the January 2026 LOI, according to FuelCell Energy and SDCL.
Final investment decision Still required for the identified projects, according to Few’s February 11, 2026 comments.
Construction or operation The public materials do not establish that all, or any specified portion, of the 450 MW is under construction or operating.

The companies have not disclosed project-by-project schedules, financing terms, power-purchase agreements, or energy-as-a-service contracts. Without those details, the 450 MW should be read as a pipeline target, not a delivery commitment.

How fuel cells could serve data centers

Power near the load

The proposed systems are intended for behind-the-meter installation close to data-center loads. FuelCell Energy says its platform can provide continuous, megawatt-scale direct-current power. Its systems are delivered today through AC-coupled configurations, and the company describes the architecture as ready for 800-volt DC designs. That is a statement about the platform’s architecture, not evidence that the SDCL projects will use a particular configuration.

Potential use of waste heat

FuelCell Energy says captured waste heat could support applications such as absorption chilling. In a suitable configuration, using heat for cooling could reduce the electricity needed for data-center cooling. The actual benefit would depend on system design and operating conditions; the announcement does not provide project-specific efficiency or cost figures.

The companies frame the proposal around high-availability, distributed power. Whether it can provide a particular site with islanding capability, meet its load profile, or outperform another power option cannot be determined from the public project details.

What the announcement does—and does not—say about timing

Few’s February comments indicate that some projects may be on short timelines, but no project-level delivery dates were given. A final investment decision is a necessary next step, not a construction start date. Until individual project contracts, FIDs, or schedules are announced, there is no confirmed date for when the proposed capacity will be built or supplying power.

How to read the separate Siemens announcement

FuelCell Energy and Siemens announced a separate memorandum of understanding on July 9, 2026. It concerns electrical balance-of-plant design and supply for fuel-cell installations supporting commercial projects of 100 MW or more, as well as joint development of distributed energy systems. It is not an award, site list, or disclosed tranche of the SDCL 450 MW opportunity.

What is still undisclosed

  • Which data centers or other customers are involved, and where the projects would be located.
  • How the capacity is divided among projects or when individual sites could be delivered.
  • Financing arrangements, contract terms, and project-level power costs.
  • How much of the identified pipeline will reach FID, construction, or operation.

Those gaps matter because capacity alone does not show whether a proposed project is financeable, scheduled, or commercially committed. The January LOI identifies an opportunity; the public statements do not establish the outcome of subsequent project decisions.
