Used-car examples compared with a $10,000 cap
The figures below come from Kelley Blue Book’s dynamic comparison page, accessed October 8, 2026. They are displayed starting prices, not guaranteed offers, a national survey or fixed market averages. The page does not establish an exact trim for each comparison figure, so confirm the trim and equipment of any car you consider.

How to use EPA fuel-economy ratings
EPA ratings offer a standardized baseline for comparing models. EPA says fuel-economy estimates draw on testing at its National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory and manufacturer-submitted tests. For a properly maintained used car, EPA identifies the original estimate as the best indicator of average gas mileage. Its used-vehicle fuel-economy guidance also explains how to find used-car labels.

Use combined mpg consistently when screening candidates, then verify the exact model year and trim. An individual car’s actual mileage can vary with driving patterns and vehicle condition, and a rating does not tell you whether that particular car has been maintained properly.
Why 2024 new-car ratings do not answer the used-car budget question
The 2024 Fuel Economy Guide lists the new Toyota Prius hybrid at 57 mpg combined, Kia Niro FE hybrid at 53 mpg combined, and Honda Accord Hybrid at 48 mpg combined, according to the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Those figures describe 2024 new-car models; they do not establish that those vehicles were available used under $10,000. Nor should a 2024 rating be transferred to an older model year.

A model’s mpg and a comparison page’s displayed starting price are only screening information. Before treating a listing as within budget, confirm the specific vehicle’s asking price and total out-the-door cost, including applicable fees. Prices and available inventory change by location and over time; trim, options, mileage and vehicle history also affect price.

- Match the listing to the model year and trim whose fuel-economy figure you are using.
- Review mileage, maintenance records, title and vehicle history, and the car’s present condition.
- Compare local listings and confirm the seller’s current price, fees and availability.
- Assess the condition of the individual car rather than assuming that a model’s fuel economy establishes its reliability, repair costs or hybrid-battery life.
For example, Cars.com has a filtered search for used Honda Insights under $10,000. A filtered search is a way to find listings, not a guarantee that a particular car is available, suitable or within budget after fees.
