The Federal Trade Commission’s December 2024 Fortnite refund payment was the first distribution—not the program’s final total. The FTC reported sending $72,003,286.94 in 629,344 payments to 496,187 recipients. A second round followed in June 2025, when the agency said it sent more than $126 million in 969,173 payments. Claims are now closed; the FTC says it is reviewing claims already submitted and expected additional payments in 2026.

What the $72 million Fortnite refund covered

On December 9, 2024, the FTC announced its first distribution to consumers affected by Epic Games’ Fortnite billing practices. Can you still apply for an FTC Fortnite refund?

No. The FTC’s program page says the deadline to submit a claim was July 9, 2025, and it is no longer accepting claims. The agency says it is reviewing and validating claims that were submitted. It indicated that additional payments were expected in 2026, but has not published a final outcome or a specific decision date for any individual pending claimant. Who could qualify for a refund?

The FTC identified three groups of potentially eligible consumers. The eligible charge periods depended on the type of complaint:

  • People charged in-game currency for items they did not want between January 2017 and September 2022.
  • Parents whose credit cards were charged for their children’s purchases without their knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.
  • Users whose accounts were locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after they complained to their credit-card company about wrongful charges.

Claimants had to be at least 18 to submit their own claim. A parent or guardian had to submit for anyone younger than 18. The claim deadline has passed, so these criteria describe the program’s eligibility rather than an open application opportunity. FTC program details

Why the FTC ordered Fortnite refunds

The refunds stem from a 2022 settlement resolving FTC allegations about Epic’s purchase interface and billing practices. The agency alleged that the interface led to unwanted purchases, that children incurred unauthorized charges, and that some users who disputed charges were blocked from accessing purchased content. Epic agreed to a $245 million consumer-refund order. These are allegations resolved through the settlement, not a new finding about every individual purchase or account. FTC settlement announcement

How recipients should handle a payment or message

The FTC says approved consumers receive the payment type they selected during the claims process. Its program page instructs recipients to cash checks within 90 days and accept PayPal payments within 30 days. The page lists the refund administrator at 1-833-915-0880; verify that number on the FTC site before calling, since contact details can change.

Be wary of anyone asking you to pay a fee, transfer money, provide account information, or act under threat to release a refund.
