Air Canada is shifting its Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to Rouge while keeping Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft at mainline, alongside cabin upgrades for Jazz-operated Air Canada Express aircraft. The program is underway, but Air Canada’s March 2026 target of 45 MAX aircraft at Rouge by year-end is not a confirmed final transfer count. The changes matter to travelers because an itinerary’s operating carrier and aircraft can affect the cabin layout, entertainment and Wi-Fi available on board.

How Air Canada is reallocating its aircraft

The program divides the fleet among three operating brands. Air Canada’s November 2025 announcement said all mainline Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft would transition to Rouge through 2026, while Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft would operate at mainline with upgraded interiors. Jazz-operated regional jets and turboprops will receive separate cabin work under Air Canada Express.

Mainline Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft remain at mainline and receive upgraded interiors, seating, entertainment and Wi-Fi. Air Canada said 15 A321s had received program upgrades by its November 2025 announcement. Air Canada, November 2025
Air Canada Express Jazz-operated E175 and CRJ-900 regional jets are slated for the new cabin standard; Jazz-operated Dash 8-400 turboprops have a separate interior and seat refit. Jet upgrades were slated to begin in 2026. The Dash 8-400 project covers 25 aircraft, with installations phased through 2026. Air Canada, November 2025 Air Canada, Dash 8-400 announcement

Air Canada’s fleet page lists MAX 8 aircraft in both mainline and Rouge inventory and identifies Jazz-operated CRJ900, E175 and Dash 8-400 aircraft under Express. Inventory is a changing snapshot, so it may not show the final transfer outcome.

What passengers can expect on Rouge’s 737 MAX 8

Air Canada announced a 177-seat Rouge configuration: 12 Business Class seats, 18 Preferred extra-legroom Economy seats and 147 Standard Economy seats. The airline describes all seats as reclining and says the aircraft will have personal on-demand entertainment and Fast, Free Wi-Fi for Aeroplan members. These are the announced layout and features, not a guarantee for every Rouge flight; aircraft assignments and equipment can vary. Air Canada’s Rouge MAX 8 announcement

The transfer also supports a new Rouge crew base in Vancouver, which Air Canada announced to support more Western Canada leisure options. That announcement does not by itself establish which routes will change or how frequently they will operate.

What changes at mainline

Air Canada says A320 and A321 aircraft will stay at mainline as they receive upgraded interiors, seating, in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi. At the time of the November 2025 announcement, the airline reported that 15 A321s already had program upgrades. It did not provide a comparable completed total for A320s in that announcement. Regional cabin upgrades: jets and turboprops

E175 and CRJ-900 regional jets

Air Canada said Jazz-operated Embraer E175 and Mitsubishi CRJ-900 aircraft would receive the new cabin standard starting in 2026, with next-generation Wi-Fi rollout underway. The announcement does not specify a finished retrofit count for these jets.

Dash 8-400 turboprops

The Dash 8-400 refresh covers 25 Jazz-operated aircraft. Air Canada says the aircraft will retain 78 seats and the same seat pitch while receiving redesigned interiors and new ergonomic seats; work is planned in phases through 2026. Wi-Fi was initially announced for selected Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport services to Montréal and Ottawa. Air Canada said installation on the rest of the Dash 8-400 fleet was still being determined. Air Canada’s Dash 8-400 cabin announcement

Wi-Fi, entertainment and onboard service

Air Canada describes Fast, Free Wi-Fi as available to Aeroplan members on eligible aircraft and routes. Its service profile says it began May 1, 2025, across North America and select destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. Eligibility and equipment vary, so travelers should check the specific flight rather than assume connectivity based on the airline brand alone. Air Canada Wi-Fi information

The November 2025 fleet announcement also described complimentary beer, wine and snacks on North American flights operated by Air Canada, Rouge and Jazz-operated Express. That is a separate service element from the aircraft retrofit; the airline’s specific onboard offering should be checked for an itinerary.

How to check the aircraft and features for a trip

  1. Open the itinerary or flight details in Air Canada’s booking or manage-booking tools and note the operating carrier and aircraft type shown for each segment.
  2. Check the relevant cabin information for that aircraft and carrier. A Rouge MAX 8, a mainline A321 and a Jazz-operated Dash 8-400 are distinct configurations.
  3. Recheck close to departure. Fleet transfers, retrofit schedules, route assignments and Wi-Fi equipment can change, and a planned feature is not confirmation that it is installed on the aircraft operating your flight.

What the announcements do not establish

The published program describes aircraft allocation and planned cabin work; it does not establish comparative fares, route frequency, operating costs, emissions per seat, reliability or passenger satisfaction. Those outcomes should not be inferred from a change in brand assignment or cabin design alone.
