T.R. Pachamuthu’s reported path ran from mathematics teaching to building the SRM education group and other ventures. In 2016, he was arrested amid allegations that money had been collected for medical-college admissions. A 2026 Madras High Court order later recounted a court-supervised claims process and quashed proceedings against him, while expressly reserving the merits of the case. The available sources do not establish an independently verified personal net-worth figure.
How Pachamuthu moved from teaching into education
A 2016 profile by Scroll.in says Pachamuthu came from a farming family in Thandavarayapuram, near Salem, and began his working life as a mathematics teacher. It describes an early business serving diploma holders preparing for the Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers examination: Pachamuthu set up coaching centres for them before developing educational institutions under the SRM name.
Scroll’s account places the expansion over decades. It dates the launch of SRM College of Engineering in Potheri to 1985; says nursing and pharmacy colleges followed in the early 1990s; and says hotel management and arts and science colleges came in 1993–94. The profile reports that the engineering college received deemed-university recognition in 2002. These dates are the reported history in Scroll’s 2016 feature, not an independently audited corporate chronology.
How the SRM group broadened
The same profile describes ventures beyond education, including media, political activity, transport, catering, real estate, energy and technology. It names Puthiya Thalaimurai and the Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK). Some descriptions of the group’s businesses draw on sources quoted anonymously in the article, so they should be read as the profile’s account rather than a definitive inventory of current holdings. The available reporting does not establish the present ownership or operating status of every business it names.

The article’s “millionaire” framing should not be mistaken for a documented wealth calculation. The sources available here provide no independently verified personal net-worth figure for Pachamuthu. The business trajectory described in the profile is not itself proof of a particular fortune.
What the 2016 medical-admissions allegations concerned
Scroll reported that parents complained about payments allegedly made to secure medical-college seats, with S. Madhan described as an intermediary. The complaints arose after NEET became the common entrance examination for MBBS admissions in 2016. In the article, lawyer Dinesh alleged that SRM management had used Madhan as an intermediary to collect capitation fees; that was an attributed statement about disputed allegations, not a judicial finding.

Scroll also reproduced an IJK statement characterising the case as a conspiracy. That was the party’s position, not an established fact. Neither the allegations reported by the press nor the party’s response should be treated as proof of what happened.
Arrest and subsequent proceedings
Scroll and contemporaneous coverage by The News Minute report that Pachamuthu was arrested on 25 August 2016; The News Minute also reported his remand. An arrest records a procedural event, not a finding of guilt.
Rank #3
A 2026 Madras High Court order, reported by LiveLaw, recounts later steps in the case, including bail-related deposits, a court-appointed commissioner’s assessment of claims and compensation disbursements. The order recounts a ₹75 crore deposit and a ₹10 crore bank guarantee in the earlier proceedings. Those were case-related amounts, not estimates of Pachamuthu’s wealth.
The order says 142 genuine victims had received compensation. It also discusses three other claimants whose admissions related to Mahatma Gandhi Medical College in Puducherry. These are procedural details as recounted by the court; the figures should not be read as a general measure of damages or as a complete accounting of every disputed claim.
Rank #4
What the 2026 order did—and did not—decide
The Madras High Court order says proceedings against Pachamuthu were quashed after claimant affidavits and disbursement of compensation. It also states that the court expressed nothing on the merits of the case in the matter before it. The result is therefore a procedural disposition described by the order, not a judicial endorsement of every historical allegation and not a basis for treating the 2016 arrest as proof of guilt.
That distinction matters when reading the story as a whole: Scroll’s 2016 feature is a reported profile and account of allegations, while the 2026 order records later court-supervised steps and the outcome for proceedings against Pachamuthu. Neither source, as described here, establishes his current business role or a verified net worth.
