Alexandr Wang’s path from MIT dropout to billionaire ran through Scale AI, the company he co-founded in 2016 with Lucy Guo. Scale initially coordinated people to label data, including road footage for autonomous-vehicle developers. Forbes Australia reported that the company’s private valuation first put Wang over the billionaire threshold in 2021; its April 2025 estimate put his net worth at $2 billion. That was a dated estimate, not a verified figure for today.
How Wang went from MIT to founding Scale AI
Wang left the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after his freshman year. He met Lucy Guo through Quora, according to Forbes Australia, and the two joined Y Combinator before starting Scale AI in 2016, when Wang was 19. In recounting the decision to build the company, he said, “But I was just like, ‘Yeah, I know how to code.”
Scale’s first business addressed a practical bottleneck: machine-learning systems need examples labeled so they can learn what is in images, video, or other data. Scale organized human workers to do that labeling. Autonomous-vehicle developers became an early market because they needed large volumes of road footage reviewed and annotated. Forbes Australia’s account of Scale’s origins describes this shift from coordinating clickworkers to serving companies building AI systems.
The human work was central to the model, not incidental to it. Wang told Forbes Australia, “They’re very, very important to the process of building powerful AI systems.” The publication also reported that Scale had more than 240,000 contract workers in its 2022 profile. TIME cited the same broad workforce figure in June 2025; neither report makes it a current headcount.

As demand for machine learning and generative AI grew, so did demand for data prepared for those systems. Scale expanded beyond its early autonomous-vehicle work into AI data services. Forbes’ 2022 profile also described work for OpenAI and government satellite-image analysis. Wang told TIME, “I think before Scale, there weren’t companies that treated data as the first-class of a problem it really is.”
That business growth mattered to Wang’s personal finances because he held an ownership stake in a private company. A founder’s estimated wealth is not the same as cash salary or money available to spend: it depends substantially on what the company is judged to be worth and what portion the founder is believed to own. Private-company valuations can change with financing terms, dilution, secondary transactions, and other deal details.

What the reported billionaire figures mean
Forbes Australia’s April 2025 profile says Scale’s 2021 valuation first made Wang a billionaire. It reported that a May funding round valued Scale at $13.8 billion, restoring his billionaire status after he dropped off the publication’s list in 2023 as private technology-company valuations declined. Forbes estimated that Wang owned 14% of Scale and put his net worth at $2 billion; the publication dates its wealth estimates to March 7, 2025.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| $7.3 billion | Scale AI valuation reported for 2021, which Forbes Australia says first put Wang over the billionaire threshold | Forbes Australia, April 2025; its earlier company profile also covered the valuation |
| $13.8 billion | Scale AI valuation in a May funding round, as reported by Forbes Australia | Forbes Australia, April 2025 |
| 14%; $2 billion | Forbes Australia’s estimated Wang ownership stake and net worth; net-worth estimates dated March 7, 2025 | Forbes Australia, April 2025 |
| 15% | A different estimate of Wang’s stake, reported in a Forbes video profile; it should not be treated as interchangeable with the 14% estimate | Forbes, August 2025 |
These figures describe different reports and dates, not a single audited balance sheet. The available reporting does not establish Wang’s net worth, ownership stake, or precise billionaire ranking in October 2026.
Did Wang become the world’s youngest billionaire?
Not in the unqualified sense implied by the original headline. Forbes Australia’s 2025 ranking context described Wang, then 28, as the youngest self-made billionaire among its relevant under-30 group. The same article identified a 19-year-old heir as the world’s youngest billionaire overall. “Youngest self-made billionaire” therefore needs both its self-made qualification and a date; the sources here do not establish Wang’s rank today.

In June 2025, Wang left the Scale CEO role and moved to Meta. TIME reported Meta’s $14.3 billion investment for a minority stake in Scale. In September, Axios described the transaction as Meta taking a 49% stake in a deal worth $14 billion. Those are the respective outlets’ descriptions; they should not be combined as if they were identical measures of price or ownership.

Scale continued under interim CEO Jason Droege, its chief strategy officer. Axios reported that the company was broadening from data labeling into AI applications and government work. Droege told Axios, “We’ve grown every single month since the deal happened”; that is his statement, not audited financial disclosure. The reporting establishes Wang’s move in 2025, but not his current title at Meta.
TIME’s June 2025 coverage also recorded criticism concerning delayed or reduced contractor payments. Scale responded that late-payment instances were exceedingly rare and that it was working to improve the process. That account adds an important qualification to a success story built partly on coordinating a very large contractor workforce.
