The timeline has since changed: Fremantle and Woodside extended their partnership through the end of 2027, and the club’s partner directory lists both Bankwest and Woodside in its Major tier. The 2023 date describes the contract position reported in 2022, not the current end date.
What Fremantle announced in October 2022
Fremantle made two sponsorship arrangements visible at once: Bankwest joined as a co-major partner, and Woodside remained in place under its existing deal. PerthNow reported on 21 October 2022 that CEO Simon Garlick said Woodside was contracted through the end of 2023. He added, “I understand the topical nature of it at this point in time but we’ll work through that with Woodside at the appropriate time.” Those remarks describe the club’s position at the time, not a present-day contract end date. PerthNow’s 2022 report covered the decision amid public discussion of Woodside; it did not independently assess the merits of that criticism.
What Bankwest’s partnership covered
Fremantle announced a four-season co-major partnership covering its AFL and AFLW teams. The club said Bankwest would return to the AFL jumper and appear on the AFLW jumper from Season 8. The announcement also linked the partnership to the Fremantle Footprints Program, which the club described as encouraging children’s activity through fundamental movement skills. It mentioned community initiatives and a commissioned mural at Bathers Beach. These are the club’s descriptions of the partnership and its intended activities, not an independent evaluation of their impact. Fremantle’s Bankwest announcement quoted Bankwest executive Jason Chan describing the bank as having supported Western Australian communities for “more than 125 years”; that figure is his characterization in the announcement.
How the Woodside timeline changed
On 19 December 2024, Fremantle announced a further two-year extension of its Woodside partnership, securing it through the end of 2027. The club described the relationship as a 15-year partnership. Both Fremantle and Woodside said the partnership supported the club’s Next Generation Academy, school programs and Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan. Their announcement also said new school programs in the Pilbara were planned to launch in 2025; the cited announcement does not establish whether they launched or what outcomes they achieved. Fremantle’s extension announcement and Woodside’s announcement provide the organizations’ accounts of the extension and its stated program commitments.

Where the sponsors stand now
Fremantle’s official partner directory, checked on 8 October 2026, lists both Bankwest and Woodside in its Major tier. That confirms their current classification on the club’s directory, but does not provide a current end date for Bankwest’s original four-season term. The 2024 announcement supplies the Woodside end date: through 2027. See Fremantle’s partner directory for its current listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the distinction matters
The 2022 story was not that one sponsor replaced the other: Bankwest replaced Programmed as a major sponsor while Woodside remained under contract. The two partnerships were presented with different team and community-program details. Bankwest’s announcement specified AFL and AFLW jumper visibility and Footprints Program activation; Woodside’s later extension named academy, school and reconciliation-plan support. Those descriptions explain what the organizations said the partnerships involved, but do not by themselves establish outcomes or the effects of either sponsorship.
