FreeTheMovies was a 2016 Kickstarter campaign for MovieSwap, a proposed online film library built around DVDs contributed by members. It drew €87,361 in pledges against a €35,000 goal, but Kicktraq records the campaign as “Cancelled by Creator.” That pledge total is not evidence that MovieSwap launched or that backers received the proposed service.
What was MovieSwap?
MovieSwap was presented as a community-powered library where members could watch and swap films. The campaign archive described it as “the first universal movie library, totally powered by the crowd, to watch and swap films without constraints.” That was promotional campaign language, not proof of a functioning service. BackerKit’s campaign archive records the pitch and the funding goal.
How was the proposed service supposed to work?
Contemporaneous coverage described a plan to collect physical DVDs from subscribers, store or digitize the films, and make them remotely viewable through a shared, cloud-based library. The proposal treated members’ discs as the source of a collective catalog rather than limiting each person to watching their own physical copy. Next’s 2016 report describes the plan. A 2016 commentary also discussed the exchange concept and campaign rewards such as hardware and DVD mailing materials, but those were proposed campaign elements, not established delivered features. Colin Vettier’s commentary
Buying DVDs does not provide access to MovieSwap or support the canceled campaign. The campaign’s focus on physical discs does not establish that the proposed library became available.

Did the FreeTheMovies Kickstarter succeed?
It exceeded its stated funding goal in recorded pledges, but it did not succeed as a delivered service. Kicktraq’s campaign record lists €87,361 pledged toward a €35,000 goal, from 4,829 backers, and labels the project “Cancelled by Creator.” BackerKit’s archive also records €87,361 raised against the €35,000 goal. Those figures describe the campaign record; they do not show that the project fulfilled rewards or launched MovieSwap.
Why was the campaign canceled?
The available campaign records and contemporaneous coverage establish that the project was canceled, but do not establish an authoritative explanation for why. Kicktraq reproduces a campaign update announcing the decision, and Next also reported the cancellation after the campaign had drawn roughly €87,000 against its €35,000 goal. It would be speculation to attribute the cancellation to a particular legal, technical, or financial cause.
Could members legally stream DVDs they contributed?
The campaign’s proposed model raises questions about copying and remotely streaming films from member-contributed discs, but the sources cited here do not establish a court or regulator ruling on MovieSwap’s design. The campaign’s own description is not a legal determination. Whether a service using that model would be authorized depends on applicable law and rights-holder permissions; owning or contributing a DVD alone should not be treated as proof that remote streaming is authorized.

The campaign record and 2016 coverage establish the historical proposal and cancellation, not the present-day operation of MovieSwap or a successor service. No current primary evidence here confirms that a service is operating. Treat MovieSwap as a historical Kickstarter project unless a current, authoritative source demonstrates otherwise.
