A free Excel football-squares template can track participants, their picks, and payments while you run an NFL or Super Bowl pool. The basic board is a 10-by-10 grid: participants claim squares, the organizer assigns digits 0–9 to both team axes after entries are filled, and the last digit of each team’s score identifies the winning square.

Excel Campus offers free digital and printable football-squares downloads. Its digital workbook uses dropdowns for participant initials, counts selected squares, totals each participant’s amount owed, and includes a yes/no paid-status field. The printable version includes a signup roster and a running square count.
Practical Spreadsheets also describes a free football-squares template for either printing as a signup sheet or distributing electronically. The publisher says its templates work with Excel and that most also work with Google Docs and OpenOffice; check the specific file in your spreadsheet app rather than assuming every workbook is compatible.
How football squares work
A standard board has 100 squares, arranged in 10 rows and 10 columns. One team is assigned to each axis. Participants claim squares before the organizer randomly assigns the digits 0 through 9 along the top and side. Assigning the numbers only after entries are complete helps prevent participants from choosing squares based on particular digits.

At a payout checkpoint, take the last digit of each team’s score. For example, if the score is 14–7, the digits are 4 and 7. Find those digits on their respective axes; the square at their intersection wins that checkpoint. The selected checkpoints and payout rules are set by the organizer, not by the grid itself.
Set the pool rules before collecting entries
Agree on the rules before people claim squares or pay. That avoids disputes over what a square costs, when a winner is decided, and what happens if the board is not full.

- Cost and entry limits: Set the price per square and whether participants may claim multiple squares.
- Payout checkpoints: State whether the pool pays at the end of each quarter, at halftime, at the final score, or at other points. Specify whether overtime counts toward the final payout.
- Payout amounts: Excel Campus gives 20% each for the first three quarters and 40% for the final as one example; it also describes splitting the pool into four equal 25% shares. These are optional formats, not standard requirements.
- Ties and unclaimed squares: Decide how to handle ties, squares no one claims, and any squares remaining when the board closes.
- Payments: Choose how payment will be collected and when it is due; the spreadsheet’s paid-status field can help track this.
- Local rules: If the pool involves money or fundraising, check requirements that apply where you are. Rules can vary by state and circumstance.
Fill in and run the Excel board
- Enter the square cost. Use the workbook’s cost field or write the amount clearly on a printed board.
- Record participants’ initials. In the digital workbook, use the participant dropdowns to assign initials to squares. For a paper signup, write each participant into the selected cells and keep the roster legible.
- Check the entries and payment tracking. Review the square counts and amounts owed; update the paid field as payments arrive. If using the printable version, reconcile the roster with the running total of claimed squares.
- Assign the digits after entries are complete. Randomly place digits 0–9 across one axis and down the other. Keep the assignment process visible to the group.
- Record each checkpoint score and identify the winner. Match the final digit of each team’s score to the appropriate axis, then use the intersecting cell to find that checkpoint’s winner. Apply the payout rules announced in advance.
Choose digital or printed entry

Check the workbook before relying on winner formulas
Excel Campus says its workbook was updated on February 11, 2024, after a user reported a winner-lookup formula issue. That historical correction is not evidence that the current download is broken, but it is a good reason to verify formula-driven results before the game.

- Download the current file from the publisher’s page and open it in your intended spreadsheet app.
- Enter a known example score such as 14–7, with axis digits that include 4 and 7.
- Confirm that the winner lookup points to the cell at the 4-and-7 intersection.
- If the result is wrong, check that the team axes and score digits are mapped in the same order as the workbook expects; alternatively, identify the winning cell manually from the axes.
