The factors the hosts raise
The episode page names several forces behind current prices. It does not rank them or say how much each contributes.
- Product development: how a model is designed, engineered, and updated over time.
- Brand positioning: where a maker places itself in the market, and what that placement lets it charge.
- Opportunity: the market conditions that let a brand price a product at a given level.
- Pre-owned market trends: what used examples are selling for, which feeds back into how new prices are perceived.
- Comparisons: set against alternative watches and against the same model’s past prices.
Read together, these factors explain why a single price cannot be judged in isolation. A price looks high or low only against a comparison point, and the episode treats the choice of comparison point as part of the question.

Three prices that get confused
Most disagreements about watch prices come from comparing numbers that measure different things. The table below separates the three measures that matter for a reader.

Because the three measures move differently, an export trend cannot establish that a particular watch became more or less expensive at retail.
What the Swiss export figures show
The episode itself gives no figures. For sector context, two recent FH reports are useful, with the caveats that come with them.

2024: CHF 26.0 billion
FH reported Swiss watch exports of CHF 26.0 billion in 2024, down 2.8% from 2023 (FH, 2025). The higher price segment accounted for more than 80% of total value and rose 1.0%, but FH said that was not enough to offset the decline in the market as a whole. FH also cautioned that export statistics only partly reflect differences between individual watchmaking firms.
2025: CHF 25.6 billion
FH reported Swiss watch exports of CHF 25.6 billion in 2025, down 1.7% from 2024 (FH, 2026). The report described uncertain and demanding market conditions. It also noted that the highest price segments continued to show demand while most products saw a downturn.

These are sector-level export and industry observations. They describe how much Swiss watchmaking sold abroad and where value concentrated. They do not show what a specific reference costs, and they do not describe the fortunes of every brand.

How to test a specific price claim
- Pin the reference and the date. A price without a reference number and a date cannot be compared with anything.
- Name the measure. Decide whether the number is a retail price, a secondary-market sale, an asking price, or an export value, and keep it in its own column.
- For pre-owned examples, record condition and completeness. Note whether the watch includes its box and papers, and whether the price is a completed sale or an asking price.
- Compare the relevant specifications and materials. Only compare references that match on the features that drive the difference you are testing.
- Check warranty, service, and retailer terms. These change what you actually pay and what you receive, even when the sticker price is the same.
- Compare with past prices of the same reference, from the same type of source. Mixing retail list prices with resale asking prices produces a misleading trend.
The watches named in the episode
The episode’s wrist-check segment mentions the Breguet Classique Tourbillon 3357, the Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow 3594.50.00, and the Omega Seamaster 300M 2254.50.00, along with an Atelier Romane rally strap. These appear as examples in a separate segment from the price discussion. The episode does not recommend any of them as a purchase, and this article does not either.
What this episode cannot answer
- It gives no model-by-model prices and no quantified price changes.
- It offers no ranked causal breakdown of why prices are where they are.
- It is a summary page, not a transcript, so its wording should be read as the editors’ summary of the discussion.
- Nothing from the episode or the export statistics explains why a particular reference carries its current retail or pre-owned price. That question needs model-specific evidence, such as dated retail and completed-sale records for the reference in question.
- The episode is from February 2024. The export figures above are newer, but neither source is a current price list.
When a price claim cannot be tied to a named reference, a date, and a measure, the episode’s own framing applies: it is a question to investigate, not an answer.
