The February 2025 headline described an expected fundraising target—not a confirmed $3 billion closing. At the time, reports said Founders Fund was raising about $3 billion for its third growth fund, with a close expected by the end of March 2025. Later coverage concerned a different fund: Growth IV, which was listed at $6.02 billion for the first quarter of 2026.

What the $3 billion headline meant

On February 11, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Founders Fund expected to conclude fundraising for its third growth fund at the end of March, targeting about $3 billion. The report, based on a source familiar with the effort, said the fund was intended primarily for additional investments in successful late-stage portfolio companies and was expected to be significantly oversubscribed. Founders Fund declined to comment. TechCrunch’s February 2025 report

The figure had been reported earlier. On December 24, 2024, Axios said Founders Fund was raising around $3 billion for the vehicle, but had not supplied prospective investors with an official target. Axios also reported that the firm’s 2022 fundraising produced a $3.4 billion second growth fund and a $1.8 billion eighth early-stage fund. Axios’s December 2024 report

So “about to close” described the expectation reported at the time. It did not establish that the fund closed precisely at $3 billion, or confirm its final amount.

Growth III and Growth IV are different funds

The roughly $3 billion figure belongs to the 2025 report about the third growth fund. The later $6 billion and $6.02 billion figures concern Growth IV, a subsequent vehicle; they are not a revised final amount for the fund in the 2025 headline.

In March 2026, TechCrunch described the preceding Growth III as a $4.6 billion vehicle that had closed less than a year earlier. Its report said Growth IV was nearing a close with $6 billion in commitments, citing people close to the firm; it also said outside investor demand exceeded capacity. Founders Fund declined to comment. TechCrunch’s March 2026 report

Buyouts’ Q1 2026 fundraising report later listed Growth IV at $6.02 billion. That provides a reported industry-data figure for the quarter, but does not reveal the fund’s signed closing documents or full investor schedule. Buyouts’ Q1 2026 list

What is established—and what is not

The available reports support a clear distinction between the two fundraises: a roughly $3 billion target reported for the third growth fund in 2024–25, followed by reporting and an industry listing placing Growth IV at about $6 billion in 2026. They do not establish the exact legal closing date or final legal terms for either vehicle, a complete limited-partner roster, or audited fund totals.

The $3 billion target was reported by Axios as approximate and not official; the February 2025 account likewise relied on an unnamed source and said the firm declined to comment. The 2026 $6 billion figure was attributed to sources close to the firm, while Buyouts listed $6.02 billion for Q1. These are reported figures with different source types, not two confirmed amounts for the same fund.
