Founders Fund’s fourth growth fund, Growth IV, was reported to have raised $6 billion by May 2026—after a March report said it was nearing that close. Bloomberg attributed the completed-raise figure and a breakdown of the capital to people familiar with the matter; Private Equity International separately listed the fund at $6.02 billion in its Q1 2026 fundraising report. Neither figure was presented as an official public disclosure by Founders Fund.
How much did Founders Fund raise for Growth IV?
Bloomberg reported on May 1, 2026, that Growth IV had raised $6 billion. Its account, based on anonymous sources familiar with the matter, said $4.5 billion came from limited partners—including sovereign wealth funds—and $1.5 billion came from senior management and employees, including Peter Thiel. Bloomberg’s report did not identify those sources by name.
Private Equity International’s Q1 2026 fundraising report lists Growth IV at $6.02 billion among the quarter’s largest fund closes. That figure is from PEI’s Q1 report; it should not be treated as a more precise official Founders Fund announcement. The two reports give different levels of precision, but the available reporting does not establish that they describe different funds or a substantive disagreement.
Why did reports say the fund was nearing a close?
On March 9, 2026, TechCrunch reported that Founders Fund was nearing a $6 billion close for Growth IV. It said about $1.5 billion was expected from the firm’s partners and that demand from outside investors exceeded the fund’s capacity, citing sources close to the firm. TechCrunch’s March report captured the fund’s reported status at that point; Bloomberg’s May account later described the raise as completed.

The close and capital breakdown were reported using anonymous sources, not an attributable statement from a named Founders Fund executive. TechCrunch said Founders Fund declined to comment. No direct quotation from Peter Thiel or another named person confirming Growth IV’s close appears in the cited coverage.
How Growth IV compares with Growth III
| Fund | Reported size | Timing and stated purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Growth III | $4.6 billion, reported by TechCrunch | TechCrunch said it closed less than a year before its March 2026 Growth IV report and was intended primarily for follow-on investments in successful late-stage portfolio companies. |
| Growth IV | $6 billion raised, reported by Bloomberg in May 2026; $6.02 billion listed by PEI for Q1 2026 | Bloomberg reported the completed raise on May 1, 2026. The cited reports do not state a specific investment purpose for Growth IV. |
The reported figures suggest Growth IV was larger than Growth III, but the figures come from separate reports and are not an official side-by-side disclosure from the firm. TechCrunch’s account of Growth III’s purpose should not automatically be read as a stated mandate for Growth IV.

What the raise says—and does not say—about Founders Fund
Founders Fund has invested in companies including Crusoe, Rippling, Stripe, Ramp, Palantir, SpaceX, Flock Safety, Anduril and OpenAI. TechCrunch also reported that the firm made its first direct investment in Anthropic in February 2026, as part of a $30 billion investment at a $380 billion post-money valuation. Those portfolio references provide context for the firm’s activity; they do not show that Growth IV is committed to any of those companies.
Growth IV also came amid a reported shift in fundraising emphasis. TechCrunch said Founders Fund announced an eighth early-stage fund with $1.8 billion in commitments in early 2022, later cut that fund in half and moved the remaining $900 million into a separate early-stage fund. The outlet said the firm had not announced a new early-stage fund since early 2022 while it was raising growth capital. These figures describe the earlier early-stage fundraising, not allocations to Growth IV.

For broader market context, PEI reported that private-equity fundraising totaled $190.8 billion in Q1 2026, 19 percent below Q1 2025 and the lowest Q1 total in six years. That industry-wide figure covers private-equity capital raised, not just venture or growth funds, and is not directly comparable to Growth IV’s reported fund size.
