Whether you can cancel the claim—or keep the recovered phone—depends on the claim stage, your policy, and your country.
What to do first
- Find your claim confirmation and identify the insurer or third-party claims administrator. Check the claim portal or call the number on your claim documents.
- Report that the phone has been recovered. Give the claim number and the device details requested. For Apple’s process, these may include the claim number or Apple repair ID, serial number or IMEI, and AppleCare plan purchase date.
- Tell the claim handler when and where you found it, and whether a replacement has shipped, arrived, or been activated—or whether the claim has been paid.
- Ask whether the claim can be cancelled or amended, whether the recovered phone is disabled, and what to do with the device. Request written instructions and keep messages, return receipts, and tracking details.
Until you receive directions, do not assume the phone is yours to use or dispose of. The rules can differ between insurers and policies.
What to do at each claim stage
Claim submitted but not approved
Contact the claims handler immediately and ask whether the claim can be cancelled or amended, whether submitted documents need updating, and whether the phone must be inspected. Apple says you might be able to cancel an AppleCare Theft and Loss claim before approval, depending on its status. That is Apple-specific guidance, not a guarantee that another insurer—or every Apple claim—can be withdrawn. If Apple approves a cancellation, its instructions say to set up the found device as new; you can restore from a backup if appropriate. Apple’s claim guidance explains its process.
Claim approved but replacement has not shipped
Ask the handler right away whether the approved claim can still be stopped or amended. Apple says an approved Theft and Loss claim permanently disables the original device, but its published guidance does not promise that an approved claim can be reversed before shipment. Confirm the status and options with the claim handler rather than assuming the replacement can be stopped.

Replacement shipped or received, or claim paid
Do not use, sell, give away, or discard the recovered phone until you have written instructions. Under Apple’s Theft and Loss guidance, an approved original device cannot be used again; Apple says it can be taken to an Apple Store or recycling centre. A cited UK AppleCare+ policy instead specifies that a device recovered after reimbursement must be returned to Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider, where it becomes Apple’s property. These are Apple-specific terms, and the UK policy wording should not be applied to other regions or plans.
Policies can also provide a repayment option. Camden Council’s tenants contents insurance policy says property recovered after payment belongs to the insurer, but lets the policyholder keep it by repaying the amount settled. This is an example from a contents policy, not a universal phone-insurance rule. Check your own policy and ask the claims handler whether keeping the phone is permitted and what repayment would involve. Camden Council’s policy wording describes its terms; AppleCare+ UK Theft and Loss policy wording sets out the cited UK return requirement.

Questions to ask the claim handler
- Can I cancel or amend the claim now that the phone has been found?
- Has the replacement shipped, has payment been made, or has the original device been disabled?
- Should I return the recovered phone, take it to an authorised location, or recycle it?
- Who owns the phone under my policy after settlement? If I can keep it, must I repay some or all of the settlement?
- Will recovering the phone affect the replacement, payment, or coverage? What documents or inspection are required?
- Can you send the instructions and any return or repayment terms in writing?
Have your claim number and device identifiers ready, but follow your provider’s requirements: the details Apple requests may not match another insurer’s process. If Apple handles the claim, check its guidance for your country and plan. Its US page notes a special return instruction for certain AppleCare plans purchased before September 15, 2020, so confirm whether that exception applies to you.
