Forward Health announced CarePod on November 15, 2023: a self-service medical pod designed for malls, gyms and office buildings. It combined guided testing and software with remote clinicians; it was not an autonomous AI doctor’s office. Forward’s rollout targets and launch prices were announcements from 2023, not proof that the service remains available today.
What Forward Health announced
CarePod was a freestanding, enclosed medical station—not simply a video-call kiosk. Forward described it as a way to complete selected screenings and measurements, get results through its app and, when needed, connect with its care team. The company’s planned locations included malls, gyms and office buildings, with Chicago’s Willis Tower among the named sites. The announcement also identified the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia as initial or planned markets. TechCrunch’s November 15, 2023 report described the launch and the company’s plans.
Forward said it would begin with 25 pods and aimed to expand to 3,200 within a year; it also said it planned to double its footprint in 2024. Those were company targets, not verified deployment figures. The same report said Forward had raised $657.5 million, including a newly announced $100 million round. Funding and ambitious targets did not establish that the rollout occurred at the proposed scale.
How a CarePod visit was supposed to work
- Unlock the pod: A member used a mobile device to gain entry.
- Choose a health app: The patient entered alone and selected an application on the touchscreen.
- Follow guided instructions: Screen and voice prompts explained how to answer questions and use the equipment.
- Collect measurements or samples: Depending on the application, the pod could use a full-body scanner, wireless blood-pressure cuff, swabs or a single-use, needleless blood-collection device. Sensors and test materials were supplied from a hidden drawer.
- Review results and next steps: Software could analyze information or produce a preliminary assessment. A Forward doctor could review cases requiring treatment decisions, issue prescriptions and provide virtual support. Results and health data were intended to appear in the Forward app.
These are different stages of care: a device gathers data, software interprets or organizes it, and a clinician makes decisions that require medical judgment. The launch description did not establish that the pod itself could make every diagnosis or prescribe independently.

What it was advertised to measure or screen
Forward presented CarePod as a platform of health apps, including:
- Full-body scanning, heart-health testing and blood-pressure monitoring.
- Thyroid, kidney and liver health assessments, plus diabetes screening.
- Weight-management support.
- COVID-19 testing, HIV screening, some sexually transmitted disease testing and strep testing, among other swab-based tests.
This list reflects services reported as part of Forward’s announcement, not proof that every test was available at every location or that every result constituted a diagnosis. The launch coverage did not provide test-by-test sensitivity, specificity, false-positive or false-negative rates, regulatory status, laboratory partners or clinical-trial results. A screening result can identify a possible risk or prompt follow-up; it is not automatically a confirmed diagnosis.
Doctors were remote, not absent
The phrase “without a doctor or nurse” applied to the pod’s physical interior. Forward’s announced model still relied on human clinicians: doctors could review results, make treatment decisions, issue prescriptions and conduct virtual visits. TechCrunch reported that Forward employed more than 100 primary-care clinicians at the time and had a five-doctor medical advisory board. An attendant was also assigned to each pod to service it and answer basic questions.

For a patient, the practical question is not just whether a clinician exists somewhere in the service. It is when a human reviews a result, how quickly a patient can speak to one, who handles abnormal or inconclusive findings, and what happens if symptoms fall outside the pod’s supported applications. The launch account did not settle those operational details.

What “AI-powered” meant—and what remained unclear
Forward said a custom-built large language model was trained to find medical research, extract clinical protocols and help create care plans. The company said clinicians could review plans and test scenarios through an internal dashboard. That description points to AI-assisted data collection and clinical decision support, with human involvement in at least some treatment and prescription decisions—not a self-governing “AI doctor.”
The launch reporting did not identify the model or models, explain whether the system was generative, rules-based or hybrid, or provide independent validation of its recommendations. It also did not establish which clinical indications were supported, how unsafe or incomplete inputs were handled, what escalation rules applied, how outputs were audited against physician decisions, or which components had medical-device clearance or authorization. “AI-powered” alone is not evidence that a test or care plan is accurate or safer than standard care.

Launch-era pricing and the household-budget question
TechCrunch reported these prices and terms in November 2023. They are historical figures, not verified current offers.
| Offering | Reported launch-era price or policy | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| CarePod membership | $99 per month | Reported as including pod access, testing, the Forward app, care-team support and virtual visits. Current availability, price and included services are unverified. |
| Conventional Forward clinic membership | $149 per month | Reported 2023 price; current availability and terms are unverified. |
| Insurance | Not accepted under the reported 2023 model | Current insurance policy is unverified. |
At the reported $99 monthly price, a full year would have cost $1,188 before any costs not included in the membership. That arithmetic is based on the 2023 price, not a current quote. Before comparing a subscription with ordinary care, a consumer would need to establish whether individual tests, prescriptions, specialist referrals and care outside the membership cost extra, and whether the fee supplements or replaces any existing coverage. A subscription is not a substitute for health insurance.

Safety, privacy and the questions that matter before relying on a pod
A pod brings tests and sensitive health information into a self-service setting. The launch coverage did not answer several practical questions consumers would need resolved before using any such service:
- Who verifies an abnormal, failed or inconclusive result, and how quickly can the patient speak with a clinician?
- What symptoms trigger an automatic escalation, and what happens if the patient becomes acutely ill inside the pod?
- How are samples processed and transported, and how are equipment, surfaces and supplies cleaned, sterilized and disposed of?
- What happens during a power, network or device outage, or if a test is contaminated or a sample is insufficient?
- How is informed consent obtained, who is clinically accountable for a diagnosis and follow-up, and can patients export records to another doctor?
- What information remains on the pod itself, and how are minors, chaperones, interpreters and sensitive examinations handled?
Forward said members owned their data and that the company would not sell personal data to third parties, according to the 2023 launch report. Those are company-stated assurances, not a substitute for reading the applicable member agreement and privacy policy. The pod’s proposed collection of biometric scans, test results, sexual-health information, prescriptions and longitudinal records makes data access, retention, sharing and export important terms to verify.

Who might benefit—and when another kind of care fits better
If offered with clear clinical oversight, a pod could make protocolized measurements or repeat screening more convenient for some people. Its fit depends on the task, not on whether the service uses AI.
| Care option | Often a better fit for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| CarePod-style self-service testing | Selected, guided measurements or screenings where a patient can use the equipment and obtain timely human follow-up if needed. | Current CarePod availability is unverified; a pod is not a general substitute for examination, complex diagnosis or emergency care. |
| Conventional primary-care practice | Ongoing relationships, complex diagnoses, physical examinations, preventive care and coordinated referrals. | Access, wait times, coverage and costs vary by practice and insurance. |
| Retail clinic or urgent-care center | Episodic needs such as common infections, strep testing, vaccinations or minor injuries, often with clinicians on site. | Scope and continuity vary; urgent care is not the right destination for every emergency. |
| Telehealth | Some low-acuity symptoms, follow-up visits and prescription renewals. | Remote assessment depends on a patient’s description and may still require an in-person examination or test. |
| Employer or insurer virtual-care program | People whose existing benefits include accessible virtual care. | Networks, covered services and costs depend on the specific plan. |
| At-home diagnostic test | Convenient collection for a particular test with a clearly stated purpose. | Usually narrower in scope and does not replace an integrated clinical evaluation. |
A self-service pod is a poor choice for emergency symptoms, an illness that needs a hands-on examination, or a complex history requiring coordinated care. People who need mobility accommodations, interpretation, help using a smartphone, assistance with sample collection, or a clinician physically present should confirm that those needs can be met before relying on a kiosk-based service. The same applies to children, older adults and anyone uncomfortable being alone in a private pod.
For personal-finance purposes, compare the full expected annual cost—not just a monthly headline—with the care and coverage already available through insurance, an employer or local clinics. The central distinction is protocolized self-service care versus human-led, longitudinal care, not AI versus doctors.
