Students criticized lesson materials and classroom rules, while district leaders were separately considering a draft process for teacher feedback on major instructional changes.
What did the board president say?
Geren said he welcomed students’ participation in board meetings and hoped to see more. In his statement, he added: “Regarding the information, insights, and opinions shared in the petition, they are valuable and timely. Those issues are in front of the board now.” The statement was reported October 9, 2026; the report said it had been shared with the Star-Telegram and submitted to Change.org for posting, but had not yet appeared there at the time.

The district also said it was aware of the petition and welcomed student perspectives. It noted that Superintendent Peter Licata meets regularly with students and said several student recommendations had already led to changes during the school year. AOL’s October 9 report quotes Geren and summarizes the district’s response.

Students from second grade through high school signed an open letter urging district leaders to address scripted lesson plans and classroom rules. The signatories said slides were often wrong, slides and learning guides sometimes did not match, and rigid plans left too little room for exploration. They also called for classroom rules to be loosened. These are claims by petitioners, not findings from an independent districtwide audit.

What reporting says about the materials
The Star-Telegram described Fort Worth ISD’s Cowtown 12 instructional model as scripted and reported that schools had differing levels of autonomy based on their ratings. Its coverage described student concerns about spelling and translation errors, mismatches between slides and learning guides, and an apparent AI-generated image in French materials. It also described apparent AI-generated errors in elementary lesson plans reviewed for the report. Those examples do not establish that every lesson contained errors or show how common such problems were across the district.

The October 6 Star-Telegram report republished by ArcaMax provides the earlier count and details of the student complaints.
Who governs Fort Worth ISD?
Fort Worth ISD is currently governed by an appointed board rather than its elected trustees. The district says the Texas Education Agency commissioner temporarily suspended the elected Board of Trustees’ powers and authority on March 24, 2026. A nine-member appointed School Board governs during the appointed term and holds public meetings with public comment. The district’s official board page describes the arrangement and public-meeting information.

What policy change was under discussion?
In a separate October 1 account, the Texas Tribune reported that managers were drafting goals and limits for the superintendent based on community feedback. A proposed limit would require a process for teachers to regularly review and provide feedback on significant curriculum or instructional-practice changes, with broad communication about the rationale and evidence tied to student outcome goals.
The managers removed explicit wording about scripted lessons from the proposed limit but kept the broader teacher-feedback provision, according to the Tribune. The report said the board planned to finalize the goals and limits at a November 10, 2026 meeting. That account describes draft language and a planned meeting, not an adopted rule. The Texas Tribune’s October 1 account explains the draft and deliberations.

- Geren said the petition’s concerns were before the appointed board and welcomed further student participation.
- Students reported problems with scripted materials and limited classroom flexibility; examples in news coverage are not proof that errors were universal.
- The cited coverage does not establish an independent districtwide audit of lesson accuracy or a causal estimate of effects on student learning.
- The board’s reported teacher-feedback language was still a proposal in the October 1 account, not a final policy.
