Boeing Global Group president Brendan Nelson called him “the ideal leader for Boeing China,” citing his industry and government experience and years of living and working in China. That was Boeing’s stated rationale for the appointment, not evidence of a particular commercial outcome.
Why did Boeing make the appointment then?
The timing placed the appointment against renewed U.S.-China trade and tariff tensions. Reuters reported that China had briefly stopped accepting new Boeing jets before deliveries resumed. The company therefore faced uncertainty around access to the market and aircraft deliveries as it pursued sales to Chinese airlines.

A reported aircraft pursuit, not a confirmed order
Reuters said Boeing was reportedly seeking to sell Chinese carriers as many as 500 jets. That figure described a prospective sale being pursued at the time, not a finalized deal, firm order count or completed sale. The report does not establish whether Boeing later secured those aircraft.
Airbus was also expanding its presence
Reuters noted that Airbus had begun operating a second A320neo assembly line in Tianjin. That was relevant competitive context, but the appointment report did not establish which manufacturer would gain market share.
