Freedom Trail Capital set a $50 million fundraising target, according to a July 2024 TechCrunch report. The amount was a target—not a verified final fund close—and available later company materials do not establish whether the firm reached it. Founded in 2023 by former Olympians Samyr Laine and Ayanna Alexander-Laine, the firm says it backs early-stage businesses where consumer products meet culture, talent and influence.
What Freedom Trail Capital was raising in 2024
TechCrunch reported on July 2, 2024, that Freedom Trail Capital was working toward a $50 million fund and had completed a small first close. At that point, the firm had invested in seven startups and had seven more investments in its pipeline, according to the report. The pipeline figure described prospective investments at the time; it does not mean those deals were completed.
The report named Sienna Naturals, Oh Norman!, Ten to One Rum and Kudos as examples of companies in the portfolio. These are a dated snapshot, not a current total or a complete portfolio list. Neither the 2025 company announcement nor a later firm update establishes the fund’s final size or confirms that the $50 million target was reached.
What the firm says it invests in
Freedom Trail Capital’s 2025 company announcement describes it as a Los Angeles- and London-based firm investing globally in early-stage consumer and technology startups. The firm’s later public profile describes its focus as “at the intersection of culture, lifestyle, and influence.” Those are the firm’s own descriptions, rather than independently verified measures of its investment strategy.

Talent and product fit
In the 2024 TechCrunch report, Samyr Laine characterized the strategy as investing in talent-led businesses. His account puts product-market fit first: a recognizable public figure is not enough on its own. The person should have a genuine connection to the product and be willing to contribute meaningful work to the company.
Laine used a celebrity who would not take part in a photo shoot or promote a product at Target as an example of a poor fit. His point was that an investor or partner whose name is attached to a company should be prepared to help build it, not merely lend it visibility.
“We’re not just talking about endorsements anymore,” Laine told TechCrunch. “We’re talking about you owning a significant part of this company. I’ve seen things fall by the wayside, and really promising brands and companies fail as a result.”
Who founded Freedom Trail Capital
Samyr Laine
TechCrunch reported in 2024 that Laine competed for Haiti in the triple jump at the 2012 London Olympics, qualified for the final and did not win a medal. He attended Harvard before transferring to the University of Texas, then attended Georgetown Law while training. Before launching the firm, he worked at Roc Nation as director of operations and at Westbrook as senior vice president of operations and strategy.
Rank #3
Laine told TechCrunch that his operating experience shaped how the firm evaluates opportunities and supports portfolio companies: “I wasn’t necessarily allocating capital and investing, but I did have a front-row view into some of the investment decisions that Roc Nation’s fund made,” he said. “I am an operator at heart, so it gives me a unique perspective on how we do diligence on investment opportunities and can support our portfolio companies.”
Ayanna Alexander-Laine and Ivan Lopez
Alexander-Laine, Laine’s wife and co-founder, competed in the triple jump for Trinidad and Tobago. The 2024 report said she was pursuing a doctorate in business administration focused on healthcare finance and healthcare inequities at that time; that dated status should not be read as a current update. She described the founders’ interest in connecting people and business to TechCrunch: “We know how to merge talent and business, and found that athletes are good in these spaces. We also have the stamina to conquer other things and other entities outside of sports.”
TechCrunch identified Ivan Lopez as the firm’s third general partner. The founders’ athletic and operating backgrounds help explain how they describe their approach, but those credentials alone do not establish investment performance or predict a fund’s returns.

Freedom Trail Capital’s August 2025 announcement listed A-Frame Brands, Berri Organics, Jiant, Kudos Diapers, Oh Norman!, Renais Gin, Sienna Naturals and Ten to One Rum as selected portfolio companies. Because the company called this a selected list, it should not be treated as a complete portfolio or used to infer a total investment count. Nor does it establish that every listed company was among the seven investments TechCrunch reported in 2024.
A later public firm update discusses a co-led financing round for Ruka Hair and the company’s planned U.S. expansion in 2026. That is evidence of subsequent firm activity and an additional portfolio example, not evidence that the original fundraising target was met.
Did Freedom Trail Capital raise $50 million?
The available published information does not verify a final close, a final fund size or whether Freedom Trail Capital reached its $50 million target. The figure should therefore be described as the fundraising target reported by TechCrunch in July 2024, not as money raised. The 2024 investment and pipeline counts are also historical snapshots, while later company materials provide selected examples rather than a full, dated accounting of the fund.
