The startup is building developer infrastructure for the era of AI coding agents. Its first product, the open-source Checkpoints CLI, links agent-session context—including prompts, transcripts, tool calls, and files touched—to Git commits.
Entire later expanded its ambitions with a July preview of a distributed Git network. That makes the company more than a funding story, but it is still an early-stage platform—not a finished replacement for GitHub.

What Entire is building
Entire describes its product as a platform for human-agent collaboration. Its broader architecture is intended to combine:
- a Git-compatible database for code, intent, and constraints;
- a semantic layer for coordinating multiple agents; and
- an AI-native software-development lifecycle and interface.
Those are the company’s stated platform goals, not features that were all available at launch. The immediately usable product was Checkpoints, which focuses on recording the context surrounding AI-assisted code changes.

Why Entire thinks Git workflows are missing information
Traditional development tools preserve the output of software work: Git records a diff, while a pull request records review comments and approvals. An AI coding agent, however, may work through a long terminal session, make numerous tool calls, inspect files, and follow constraints that never appear in the final commit.
Entire argues that this creates a provenance and handoff problem. Developers can see what changed without necessarily seeing the prompts, intermediate actions, or external context that led to the change. Capturing that information could help with review, debugging, auditing, and collaboration between humans and multiple agents.
That is a company thesis, not proof that every team needs a complete agent transcript. Existing Git hosts, pull-request systems, observability tools, and AI vendors are also developing ways to track AI-assisted work.

How Checkpoints works
Checkpoints detects agent-assisted work and associates an agent session with the resulting Git commit. Depending on the session, the stored context can include prompts, transcripts, tool calls, files touched, decisions, and token usage. It records externally observable session artifacts—not a model’s hidden internal chain of thought.
Entire says checkpoint data is stored on a separate Git branch:
entire/checkpoints/v1
A basic documented workflow looks like this:
git add hello-entire.md
git commit -m "Add first Entire demo file"
entire checkpoint list
git push
The CLI is open source and MIT licensed, according to Entire. The quickstart documentation lists macOS, Linux, and Windows support and requires Git plus a supported AI coding agent. The installation command advertised by Entire is:
curl -fsSL https://entire.io/install.sh | bash
Supported integrations change over time. The launch materials named Claude Code and Gemini CLI; Entire’s later materials also list agents including Codex, Cursor, Factory, and GitHub Copilot.
The $60 million funding round
Entire announced the following financing details:
- Round: $60 million seed
- Announced: February 10, 2026
- Reported valuation: $300 million
- Lead investor: Felicis
Other institutional investors included Madrona, Microsoft’s M12, Basis Set Ventures, 20VC, Cherry Ventures, Picus Capital, and Global Founders Capital. Named individual backers included Jerry Yang, Olivier Pomel, Garry Tan, Gergely Orosz, and Theo Browne, among others.
Felicis described the financing as the largest seed investment in developer-tools history. That is an investor characterization, not an independently verified industry record. The reported valuation also describes the financing associated with the round; it does not establish that Entire has already proven a $300 million business.
Who is Thomas Dohmke?
Dohmke became GitHub’s CEO in 2021 and left the role in August 2025. He previously founded HockeyApp, which Microsoft acquired. His GitHub tenure coincided with the rapid expansion of GitHub Copilot, although it would be inaccurate to describe him as Copilot’s sole creator.
Rank #3
His background matters because Entire is attempting to build a new infrastructure layer after he led the dominant developer platform. The company’s bet is that AI agents will change how code is produced enough to require new systems for provenance, coordination, and repository access.

What changed in July 2026?
On July 8, 2026, Entire announced a preview of a distributed Git network. Developers can mirror public or private GitHub repositories onto Entire infrastructure in the United States, the European Union, and Australia while keeping the original repository on GitHub.
Entire says regional mirrors can give agents faster access and reduce pressure on a single Git host, including origin rate-limit pressure. That is the network’s stated purpose, not a guarantee for every workload. The preview was waitlist-based, and commercial pricing had not been disclosed in the available July coverage.
The distinction is important: Checkpoints is an open-source CLI, while the distributed Git network is a hosted infrastructure preview with a separate availability and pricing question.
Is Entire competing with GitHub?
Initially, it is more complementary than competitive. The preview mirrors GitHub repositories, so a team can retain GitHub as its canonical host while allowing agents to access a regional Entire copy.

Longer term, Entire says it intends to support native hosting of new public and private repositories and move toward a more decentralized network. That could make it a competitor to GitHub’s repository and collaboration layer. But calling Entire a “GitHub killer” or complete replacement today would overstate the product’s current status.
Entire also integrates with coding agents rather than replacing them. Its value proposition is the context and Git infrastructure around agent work, not a claim that it has built the best coding model or editor.

Privacy and secrets
Agent sessions may contain proprietary source code, credentials accidentally pasted into a terminal, internal URLs, customer information, product strategy, local file paths, and tool outputs. Entire’s documentation warns that pushing checkpoint history to a public repository can make captured context public as well.
Before enabling it on sensitive repositories, teams should define redaction, retention, access-control, and public-repository policies. Provenance capture is not automatically safe simply because it is stored alongside Git.
Storage and repository growth
Transcripts and tool-call metadata can increase storage, synchronization, and indexing requirements. The available sources do not quantify that overhead, so organizations should measure it on representative repositories rather than assume it will be trivial.
Reliability and dependence
The hosted network introduces dependence on Entire’s infrastructure, synchronization, availability, policies, and eventual pricing. Potential failure modes include stale mirrors, failed synchronization, incomplete indexing, unsupported custom agents, and checkpoint data not being pushed after a user skips the linking prompt.
What provenance cannot prove
A transcript can make a change easier to inspect, but it does not prove that generated code is correct, secure, maintainable, or free of licensing problems. Teams still need testing, code review, security scanning, and governance.
Who should consider Entire?
Entire may be worth evaluating for teams that already use Git and coding agents, need an audit trail for AI-assisted changes, coordinate multiple agents, or want to preserve context across developer handoffs. It is less attractive for organizations that cannot store prompts and transcripts in repository-adjacent infrastructure, need mature enterprise controls and published service commitments, or want a complete GitHub replacement immediately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Bottom line
Entire has a credible initial wedge: making AI-assisted software work persistent and inspectable instead of leaving important context inside transient agent sessions. The later distributed Git preview expands that idea into infrastructure for agent-heavy repositories.
But the $300 million reported valuation reflects a much larger platform ambition than the initial CLI alone. As of August 2026, the practical picture is an open-source Checkpoints tool plus a developing, waitlist-based distributed Git network—not a mature GitHub replacement. The decisive questions are whether Entire can protect sensitive session data, operate reliably at scale, and demonstrate that captured context and regional mirroring are worth the added complexity and eventual cost.
