Daniel Rhyne, a former infrastructure engineer, was sentenced to 32 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to two counts tied to an attempted Bitcoin extortion scheme against his former employer. Prosecutors said he threatened to keep shutting down company servers unless he received approximately 20 bitcoin, valued at approximately $750,000 at the time.
What happened in the Bitcoin extortion case?
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, Rhyne was living in New Jersey and working as a core infrastructure engineer at an industrial company headquartered there when the conduct occurred. The company has not been identified in the official releases reviewed; prosecutors refer to it as “Victim-1.” DOJ account of the conduct
In November 2023, prosecutors said, Rhyne used unauthorized remote desktop sessions and scheduled tasks to interfere with the company’s systems. The actions included deleting network administrator accounts, changing passwords and shutting down servers. On November 25, he emailed employees threatening further server shutdowns unless the company paid approximately 20 bitcoin. The Justice Department put the bitcoin’s value at approximately $750,000 at that time; that is a historical valuation, not a current Bitcoin price. DOJ sentencing release
How the case changed from arrest to sentence
| Date | Case development |
|---|---|
| November 2023 | Prosecutors say Rhyne carried out the network attacks and sent the extortion email. |
| August 27, 2024 | Rhyne was arrested in Missouri. A contemporaneous report described three initial charges: extortion related to a threat to damage a protected computer, intentional damage to a protected computer, and wire fraud. The Hacker News report |
| April 1, 2026 | Rhyne pleaded guilty to a two-count information charging extortion in relation to a threat to damage a protected computer and intentional damage to a protected computer. DOJ plea announcement |
| September 28, 2026 | U.S. District Judge Michael A. Shipp imposed a 32-month prison sentence in federal court in Trenton. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the sentence on October 5, 2026. DOJ sentencing announcement |
What did Rhyne plead guilty to?
The final plea covered two counts: extortion related to a threat to damage a protected computer, and intentional damage to a protected computer. The earlier 2024 report’s wire-fraud count is not among those two plea counts. The later disposition should therefore be described as a guilty plea to two computer-related offenses, not as a conviction on all three charges originally reported.
