The headline most likely refers to Jonjo Shelvey, the former Burnley midfielder who joined Arabian Falcons in the UAE Second Division after leaving Burnley in 2025. The £25,000-a-week Burnley wage in the headline is not confirmed by the reporting available on Shelvey’s career. The only wage figure attributed to him is his own estimate that a UAE Second Division footballer earns a “ballpark” £2,000 a month.

Who the headline is about

The Independent connects Shelvey with both Burnley and Arabian Falcons, a club in the UAE Second Division. That makes him the most likely subject of a headline that describes a former Burnley star now playing in the UAE’s second tier. The headline does not name him, so readers should treat the identification as the best-supported match rather than an explicit confirmation from the headline itself.

What the reporting establishes

Two reports carry the core timeline. The Independent covered Shelvey’s move and his explanation for it in October 2025. Gulf News reported in April 2026 that he had retired as a player and become Arabian Falcons’ head coach.

April 15, 2026 Retires as a player and takes the head-coach role at Arabian Falcons Gulf News

Gulf News is the most recent report on Shelvey’s status that this article can date. Nothing later in the reporting confirms whether he is still in the head-coach role as of October 2026.

The £25,000-a-week claim

The headline says Shelvey earned £25,000 a week at Burnley. Neither The Independent nor Gulf News gives a Burnley wage, a contract length or a start and end date for any contract. Until a reliable report sets out that figure with its source and period, it should be treated as unverified.

The number is still useful as a test. If it were accurate, it would work out as follows:

  • Per year: £25,000 × 52 weeks = £1,300,000 gross, assuming a full year of pay at that rate.
  • One week of pay: roughly 12.5 months of the £2,000 monthly figure Shelvey gave for the UAE Second Division.
  • Annual gap: £1,300,000 compared with £24,000 (£2,000 × 12) is about 54 times larger. This comparison is arithmetic only. It is not a verified pay gap, because the Burnley figure is unconfirmed and the UAE figure is one player’s estimate.

What Shelvey said about money

The Independent attributes this sentence to Shelvey, from its October 16, 2025 report:

“There’s no money in the UAE Second Division League. The ballpark of the standard wage here is £2,000-a-month for a footballer.”

The quote is his own account of the league’s pay and of why he moved. It is not an independent league statistic, and it does not show what Arabian Falcons paid him. The report also does not say whether the £2,000 figure is gross or take-home pay.

What the gap teaches about pay headlines

Pay stories about athletes mix together figures that do not measure the same thing. Before repeating a number like this, check the following:

  • Time period: A weekly figure and a monthly figure cannot be compared directly. Convert both to the same period first.
  • Gross or net: Headline wages are usually before tax and other deductions. Take-home pay can be much lower, and the reports here do not say which measure applies.
  • Contract length: A high weekly rate over a short deal is worth less than the same rate over several years. Neither report gives a Burnley contract length.
  • Who gave the figure: A player’s own estimate of a league’s typical pay is one data point, not an average. A club’s payroll or a published contract would be stronger evidence.

For readers planning their own finances, the more useful lesson is that a sports career can produce very high income for a limited period, and that a headline figure is rarely the amount someone keeps or the amount that applies to a different league.

Current status

The most recent dated report establishes that Shelvey had retired as a player by April 15, 2026, and was head coach at Arabian Falcons at that point. Readers should treat that as the latest confirmed status, not a guarantee of his position today.
