Ford’s aluminum disruption stemmed from two fires at Novelis’s Oswego, New York, facility in 2025, not from a current, company-wide aluminum shortage. The fires threatened production of Ford’s F-Series trucks and led to substantial estimates of lost output and cost. Novelis said its Oswego hot mill was back online on June 10, 2026, while Ford later clarified that a separate F-150 supplier issue in late September 2026 was unrelated to aluminum.
Why the Novelis fires mattered to Ford
Novelis’s Oswego, New York, plant is an important source of aluminum for automakers. Fires at the facility in September and November 2025 interrupted supply to Ford, which uses aluminum in the body of its F-Series trucks, including the F-150. The second fire disrupted the recovery timeline after the first incident. This was a supplier interruption with consequences for Ford’s production; it is not evidence that Ford had run out of aluminum altogether.
What Ford estimated the disruption would cost
In 2025, Ford estimated that the supply interruption could mean up to 100,000 fewer F-Series trucks through the end of that year and could cost as much as $2 billion, according to Reuters. These were Ford’s estimates for the 2025 disruption, not current loss figures or a final tally of what the fires ultimately cost. Reuters report

The estimates describe potential effects on production and Ford’s finances. They do not establish how much, if at all, the fires changed retail prices for Ford vehicles.
Ford’s planned production response for 2026
Ford announced in 2025 that it planned to add more than 50,000 F-150 and Super Duty trucks to 2026 production. The company said the increase was intended to meet demand and recover losses from the Novelis fire. It was a plan, not a confirmation that the additional trucks were ultimately built. Novelis restarted its Oswego hot mill in June 2026
On June 10, 2026, Novelis said the Oswego hot mill was back online and that it was working with customers to ramp up supply. CEO Steve Fisher called the restart “an important step forward for our operations and, most importantly, for our customers.” Novelis facility update
A mill restart and a supply ramp-up do not by themselves show that all disrupted output or inventories had been restored. The available updates do not quantify how much of Ford’s production recovery by October 2026 came specifically from Oswego aluminum.

Ford’s later F-150 supplier issue was unrelated
In its October 2026 sales update, Ford said a short-term F-150 supplier issue at the end of September was unrelated to aluminum. Ford also said the issue’s expected financial impact could be contained within its existing full-year adjusted EBIT guidance.
