Ford’s U.S. electric-vehicle sales fell 39.4% year over year in April 2025, to 4,859 vehicles. In the same month, hybrid sales rose 29.6%, truck sales rose 18.9%, and total Ford sales increased 16.2%. The figures show different sales trends; Ford’s sales release does not establish that truck technology caused the gains.

Ford Motor Company published these April year-over-year figures on May 1, 2025. Vehicle counts and percentage changes are for the United States and compare April 2025 with April 2024.

Why did Ford EV sales fall in April 2025?
Ford’s release reports sales, not the reasons behind them. Reuters, in a report republished by Investing.com on May 1, 2025, said a Ford spokesperson attributed the EV weakness to model-year changeovers for the two vehicles and low dealer-lot supply. Reuters also reported that strong truck demand and Ford’s employee-pricing program aided overall sales. These are attributed explanations, not quantified causes demonstrated by Ford’s table.

The data also show that the decline was not identical across Ford’s two named electric models: Mustang Mach-E sales fell 40.2%, while F-150 Lightning sales fell 16.7%. The reported figures do not explain the difference between those model results.

How to read the hybrid and truck gains
Hybrid sales increased by 29.6%, while truck sales increased by 18.9%. Those are separate categories in Ford’s report: the figures establish that both rose during April, but do not show that hybrid technology, truck technology, or a shift from one powertrain to another produced the change. The 16.2% increase in total company sales likewise describes the overall result, not a proven effect of any one model, program, or technology.

Ford’s January-through-April totals provide a different comparison from April alone. Through April 2025, the company reported 27,409 electric vehicles, down 2.9% year over year; 74,404 hybrids, up 31.9%; and 709,966 total vehicles, up 3.2%. The 2.9% EV decline is the four-month year-to-date change, not April’s 39.4% drop.
