GM ended production of its BrightDrop electric delivery vans at its CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, but the announcement did not say the facility itself was permanently closed. Ontario Premier Doug Ford was reported to threaten a lawsuit if GM breached its agreement with the province. The available sources do not establish what that agreement required, whether GM breached it, or whether Ontario later filed suit.
What GM announced about the Ingersoll plant
On October 21, 2025, General Motors said it would end BrightDrop electric delivery van production at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll. GM said production would not move to another site and that it would assess CAMI for future opportunities. That was an end to BrightDrop production there, not an announcement that the facility had been permanently closed. GM’s announcement
GM attributed the decision to slower-than-expected growth in the commercial electric delivery van market, the plant’s operation below capacity, and broader market and regulatory factors, including the removal of U.S. tax credits. What Ford reportedly threatened—and what is not established
A secondary Reddit post quotes Ontario Premier Doug Ford as saying: “If they breach the contract, we’re gonna sue them.” Reddit post quoting Ford The statement is conditional: it describes a possible response if GM breached an agreement. The available sources do not provide the agreement’s relevant wording, establish that GM breached it, or confirm that Ontario filed a lawsuit. A threat of legal action is not the same as a filed case.
Without the agreement or a reliable official account of its obligations, it is not possible to determine whether ending BrightDrop production violated a provincial commitment or what remedies might apply. The production announcement alone does not resolve that legal question.

What happened to CAMI workers
Unifor reported that 1,050 of its members were at the idled CAMI plant in 2026. In its August 30, 2026 ratification notice, the union said the majority of CAMI members were on indefinite layoff. Did the 2026 GM agreement bring a new product to Ingersoll?
Unifor said the ratified agreements secured more than C$1 billion in Canadian investments. The union identified a new single-source next-generation transmission at the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant and the return of next-generation Heavy-Duty GMC Sierra production to Oshawa. It described CAMI as idled and did not identify a new product assignment for Ingersoll. The investment total is a collective Canadian figure, not an allocation to CAMI. Unifor ratification notice

GM said CAMI would be assessed for future opportunities, but the cited announcement did not name a replacement product or set a restart date. Unifor’s latest cited status, dated August 30, 2026, described the plant as idled and most CAMI members as on indefinite layoff.
