Ford plans to begin producing a new family of gas-powered trucks at its Tennessee Truck Plant in 2029, CEO Jim Farley said in a company announcement on December 15, 2025. Ford has not named the trucks or disclosed their specifications, prices, order dates, or customer availability.
What Ford announced
Ford is renaming its Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center at the BlueOval City campus the Tennessee Truck Plant. The facility is slated to build new affordable gas-powered truck models, which Ford described as a family of trucks rather than a specific named vehicle. The planned production start is 2029. Ford’s December 15, 2025 announcement describes this as a change to the facility’s product plan, not a truck already in production.
What happened to the planned electric truck?
The new gas-powered trucks replace the next-generation electric truck previously planned for the Tennessee facility. In August 2024, Ford had described an electric truck for the site with a launch retimed to the second half of 2027. That is historical context; Ford’s newer announcement makes the Tennessee plant’s planned product direction gas-powered trucks. Ford’s August 2024 release documents the earlier plan.
This facility-specific change does not establish that Ford is abandoning all electric trucks or its broader EV plans. In the same December 2025 announcement, Ford said it expects about 50% of its global vehicle volume to be hybrids, extended-range electric vehicles, and battery-electric vehicles by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. Those are company projections, not independently verified outcomes.

Why Ford says it changed course
Farley framed the shift as a response to customer demand and a reallocation of investment. “This is a customer-driven shift to create a stronger, more resilient and more profitable Ford,” he said. He added that Ford was redeploying capital toward higher-return opportunities, including Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids, and its battery energy storage business. These comments describe Ford’s wider strategy; they do not provide a truck-specific business case or guarantee that the plan will meet its targets.
Ford estimated about $19.5 billion in special items related to its strategic actions, with about $5.5 billion in cash effects. These company-reported financial impacts relate to the broader set of actions, not solely to the Tennessee truck program.

What is—and is not—known about the trucks
Ford’s announcement does not identify the model name or names, body styles, engine, fuel economy, production volume, or price. It also gives no order date or date when customers can expect deliveries. “Affordable” is Ford’s description; the announcement does not attach a dollar figure to it.
The 2029 date is Ford’s planned production start, not a guaranteed showroom or delivery date. Ford’s announcement cautions that forward-looking plans depend on management expectations and assumptions and may be affected by delays or production difficulties.

Keep the Tennessee truck separate from Ford’s Ohio van
Ford also announced a separate gas-and-hybrid commercial van planned for production at Ohio Assembly Plant starting in 2029. That van is a different vehicle and facility from the new gas-powered truck family planned for Tennessee.
