Ford is scaling back selected electric-vehicle programs, not abandoning EVs. The company’s strategy has shifted from a broader lineup of large electric vehicles toward a lower-cost midsize electric pickup, hybrids, extended-range EVs, and commercial vehicles. The “nation’s second-largest EV brand” description refers to Ford’s own claim in 2024; the available figures do not establish its U.S. EV-brand ranking in 2026.
Why is Ford cutting EV plans?
Ford said on December 15, 2025, that lower-than-expected demand, high costs, and regulatory changes had weakened the business case for selected larger electric vehicles. It announced about $19.5 billion in special items and approximately $5.5 billion in cash effects, with payments extending into 2026 and 2027. Those are company estimates associated with the strategy reset, not a measure of the cost of every Ford EV or proof that all electric vehicles are unprofitable. Ford’s December 2025 announcement describes the changes.
The reset redirected investment toward what Ford described as higher-return opportunities: affordable EVs on its Universal EV Platform, hybrids, extended-range EVs, trucks, vans, and stationary battery storage. In 2024, Ford had already said customers were more cost-conscious than early EV adopters and that pricing pressure and compliance requirements shaped its plans. Those are Ford’s explanations of the market, rather than independent measurements of why buyers choose one powertrain over another. Ford’s April 2024 roadmap set out that earlier framing.
What changed in Ford’s EV roadmap?
| Area | Earlier direction | What Ford later announced |
|---|---|---|
| Electric pickup | Ford’s 2024 roadmap included electric pickups planned for 2027. Ford, April 2024 | Ford retained an affordable midsize electric pickup on the Universal EV Platform, with production planned at Louisville beginning in 2027. This is a company plan, not a launched vehicle. Ford, December 2025; Ford, July 2026 |
| F-150 Lightning | The current-generation all-electric pickup was in production. | Ford said production of the current F-150 Lightning had concluded and described a next-generation Lightning using extended-range electric architecture. Any range or performance figures Ford gives for that future model are projections, not independently verified results. Ford, December 2025 |
| Commercial van | A commercial van was planned as part of the 2024 EV roadmap, with a 2026 target. Ford, April 2024 | Ford said it would replace a planned North American electric commercial van with a gas- and hybrid-powered commercial van. Ford, December 2025 |
| Tennessee plant | The Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center was intended for EV production. | Ford renamed it the Tennessee Truck Plant and planned to make affordable gas-powered trucks there beginning in 2029. Ford, December 2025 |
The clearest distinction is between canceled or redirected programs and the EV work Ford kept. The company has narrowed its pure-EV ambitions in North America, while continuing to plan a lower-cost battery-electric pickup and pursuing other electrified formats.

Is Ford still making electric vehicles?
Ford’s announcements describe continued EV development, not an exit. The retained midsize pickup is intended to be a fully electric vehicle built on the Universal EV Platform, with Louisville production planned for 2027. Ford’s July 2026 sales update said the plant was being retooled for that pickup; the timing remains a target and does not mean production or customer deliveries have begun. Ford’s July 2026 update also reported 1,006,515 total vehicle sales in the first half of the year and an estimated 12.3% June retail share. Those overall-company figures are not EV sales or an EV-brand ranking.
Ford is also investing in battery storage beyond vehicles. It said it planned roughly $2 billion of investment over two years and expected initial capacity within 18 months. Its second-quarter 2026 update described an agreement with EDF Power Solutions and a target of 20 GWh of annual storage capacity by late 2027. The figures are company plans and targets, not completed capacity. Ford’s Q2 2026 update discusses the storage business.

What happened to the all-electric F-150 Lightning?
Ford said production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning had concluded. The company described a next-generation Lightning with extended-range electric architecture, a format that pairs electric drive with an onboard engine-generator to extend driving range. It is distinct from the current all-electric model; Ford’s future-model range and performance figures should be read as company projections until independently established. Ford’s announcement provides its description of the change.
Is Ford still the second-largest EV brand?
That was Ford’s own description in April 2024, when it said it had been the No. 2 U.S. EV brand for two years. In the same announcement, Ford reported first-quarter EV sales up 86% year over year and hybrid sales up 42% year over year. Those figures describe the period Ford reported in 2024; they do not establish a present-day ranking. Ford’s 2024 release is the source for the claim.

Ford’s July 2026 sales release reports total vehicle sales, retail share, and model figures, not a comparable U.S. EV-brand leaderboard. It reported 357,801 first-half F-Series sales and a record 46,507 first-half Maverick Hybrid sales. These numbers show the scale of Ford’s truck business and its emphasis on hybrids, but neither can be used to infer the company’s rank among EV brands. Ford, July 2026.

Ford said its Model e segment narrowed its EBIT loss for a third consecutive quarter year over year in its Q2 2026 commentary. The company also said that quarter’s GAAP net loss included special charges, most of which were tied to the BlueOval SK joint-venture disposition and previously announced EV program cancellations. These are Ford’s descriptions of segment performance and charges; a narrower segment loss is not the same as overall profitability, nor does it by itself demonstrate that the revised EV strategy is succeeding.
