Chipotle’s “Food with Integrity” is a sourcing and operating framework—not a single certification. It sets expectations for ingredients, animal welfare, suppliers, workers and environmental practices. Chipotle’s latest update reports 2025 spending and operational results, but those company figures should be distinguished from Real Foodprint’s modeled estimates of environmental benefits.
What “Food with Integrity” means
Chipotle describes the program as a way to source ingredients grown, raised and harvested with respect for people, animals and land. Its sustainability work is organized around People, Food and Animals, Environment, and Giving. The company also says it pursues long-term supplier relationships and equitable pricing. These are the company’s stated principles and practices, not a stand-alone outside certification. Chipotle’s sustainability overview
How Chipotle says it sources ingredients
Chipotle’s examples of its standards cover animal raising, ingredient practices and supplier oversight. The scope of individual claims matters: some apply to U.S. restaurants or specified products, rather than every ingredient everywhere.
- Beef: Chipotle says beef is traceable to its ranch of origin and has no added hormones or antibiotics. The company also says it requires vegetarian feed for products supplied to U.S. restaurants.
- Beef and chicken: Chipotle describes a “no antibiotics ever” standard for beef and chicken supplied to the company.
- Pork: Chipotle says its pigs are raised outdoors or in bedded barns.
- Dairy: The company says active milk cows have pasture access when weather permits.
- Supplier oversight: Chipotle says suppliers are subject to third-party audits and certifications.
These descriptions report Chipotle’s published standards; they do not, by themselves, establish that every farm or facility has been independently verified to meet them at all times. Chipotle’s sourcing standards

Supplier checks and worker protections
Chipotle’s supply-chain disclosure says the company periodically assesses supply chains, routinely visits supplier facilities, and conducts announced and unannounced inspections itself and through third parties. It also says food suppliers certify compliance with applicable supplier standards each year. Those standards address forced labor, child labor, working hours and conditions, human trafficking and slavery.

What Chipotle reports investing and achieving
Chipotle’s 2025 sustainability update reports the following purchases, spending and operating results. These are company-reported figures; the release does not establish that every result was independently assured. Chipotle’s 2025 sustainability update
| Area | Chipotle-reported 2025 figure |
|---|---|
| Local food systems | More than 50 million pounds of locally grown produce purchased |
| Local food systems | Over $43 million invested in local food systems across the U.S. |
| Farming support | Completed a commitment to donate $5 million by the end of 2025 to support the future of farming |
| Food standards | 100% of ingredients sold in U.S. restaurants met Food with Integrity standards |
| Climate operations | Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions down 17% from baseline |
| Electricity | 81% renewable electricity for restaurant operations |
| Packaging | 2.2 million fewer cases of corrugate in the supply chain |
The emissions and electricity figures describe restaurant operations, not the full footprint of every ingredient or the entire supply chain. Chipotle’s update also sets future targets: increase operational waste diversion by 5% by 2030, support 50,000 acres of agricultural practices that promote soil and water health by 2030, and source 30% of U.S. rice from farms using efficient irrigation systems by 2030. Targets are not the same as achieved results.

Real Foodprint: estimates, not a meter on each order
Real Foodprint is a digital-order tool available through Chipotle’s app and website. In its 2025 results, published in 2026, Chipotle reported estimates across digital orders of more than 10,060 metric tons of carbon emissions avoided and more than 616 million gallons of water saved. The same results listed 2,230 acres of organic land supported, 46,503 acres of improved soil health and 9,465 kilograms of antibiotics avoided. These are modeled comparisons, not direct measurements of the effect of an individual order or a particular farm.
Chipotle says HowGood supplied the metrics by comparing averages for ingredients sourced under Chipotle’s standards with conventional industry averages. The estimates use information about similar sourcing practices and the percentage of ingredients in menu items. HowGood assessed 53 ingredients and consolidated more than 600 data sources and certifications, including peer-reviewed research, government and NGO publications, and industry information. That methodology can estimate differences between sourcing profiles, but it does not directly meter the environmental impact of a specific meal. Chipotle’s Real Foodprint explanation
How to read the numbers over time
Reporting periods and baselines affect comparisons. Chipotle’s May 2025 announcement about its 2024 report said the company had bought 47 million pounds of local produce and transitioned 425 acres of conventional farmland to organic farmland using transitional growing methods by the end of 2024. It also reported that all U.S. suppliers were held accountable to Food with Integrity standards, Scope 1 and 2 emissions were 15% below a 2019 base year, 61% of electricity purchased was renewable, and operational waste diversion was 50% for 2024. Chipotle’s 2024 report announcement
Those 2024 figures are not direct like-for-like substitutes for the 2025 update: the emissions comparison explicitly uses a 2019 base year, and the purchasing and operational figures refer to different reporting years. Compare them only with their year, scope and stated baseline attached.
Is Chipotle sustainable?
The evidence supports a narrower answer than a simple yes or no. Chipotle has published sourcing standards, supplier oversight processes, local-food investment figures, and operational metrics and targets. Its 2025 update reports progress on emissions and renewable electricity, while Real Foodprint offers modeled comparisons tied to ingredient sourcing. The available company materials do not independently establish the real-world impact of every policy or estimate, nor do they verify outcomes at every supplier site.
Chipotle frames the program as part of its plans for growth. In the company’s May 7, 2025 report announcement, Chief Corporate Affairs and Food Safety Officer Laurie Schalow said, “How we grow our food is how we grow our future,” and described the initiatives as supporting a long-term goal of operating 7,000 restaurants across the U.S. and Canada. That is an executive’s statement of company ambition, not an independent assessment of sustainability performance.
