Axios reported on October 8, 2026, that OpenAI had $50 billion in annualized revenue, while a $70 billion annualized figure had been reported in September; the difference was attributed to how partner sales are counted. Neither figure is audited revenue for a completed year. For public companies, the investment question is whether AI demand is showing up in recognized revenue and durable profits—and whether the share price already reflects that growth.
What the OpenAI revenue report does—and doesn’t—show
Axios reported the $50 billion figure as annualized revenue, not completed full-year revenue. It described the earlier $70 billion figure as a grossed-up comparison intended to account for differences in how companies treat sales through partners. The underlying investor presentation was not available for independent review, so both figures should remain attributed to Axios rather than treated as audited financial statements.

Annualizing sales means extending a shorter period’s pace across a year. It can help illustrate momentum, but it is not the same as reporting the revenue actually earned over a full fiscal year. Axios also characterized public-market investors as generally focusing on actual revenue rather than startup-style annualized figures; that is Axios’s characterization, not a universal rule.

It also said a funding round raised the value of the OpenAI Foundation’s stake to more than $180 billion. Those statements describe infrastructure and funding needs; they do not disclose profitability.

What listed companies’ results reveal about AI demand
Public-company filings can show where AI-related commercial activity is reaching reported results. The figures below are useful evidence of exposure or demand, but they are not directly comparable: they cover different businesses, periods and measures.
| Company and period | Reported evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft, fiscal 2026 | $24.1 billion in revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI, including revenue-sharing payments; $6.0 billion in accounts receivable from OpenAI as of June 30, 2026. | Microsoft reported substantial commercial arrangements with OpenAI and a receivable balance on that date. | This is not OpenAI’s total revenue, nor does it establish that Microsoft shares are attractively priced. |
| Microsoft, fiscal 2026 Q4 | Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time; Microsoft 365 Copilot exceeded 30 million paid seats. | Microsoft reported milestones in cloud revenue and paid product adoption. | The figures alone do not show how much revenue or profit is attributable specifically to AI, or what shareholders will earn. |
| NVIDIA, fiscal 2026 Q4 | $62.3 billion in quarterly company-wide revenue, up 75% year over year; NVIDIA attributed growth to accelerated computing and AI. | The company reported strong quarterly growth and linked it to those areas. | This is not revenue solely from OpenAI or generative AI. |
These disclosures offer different levels of visibility. Microsoft’s OpenAI arrangements are a direct partner exposure; Azure and Copilot milestones indicate broader commercial activity. NVIDIA’s company-wide result shows scale and growth, but does not isolate AI revenue. None of these measures is a substitute for examining the company’s full financial statements and the price of its shares.
Why growth has to be weighed against costs
Infrastructure can pressure margins
Microsoft said its Microsoft Cloud gross margin percentage declined to 66% in fiscal 2026. It cited continued investment in AI infrastructure and growing use of AI products, partly offset by efficiency gains. That is a reminder that rising demand can require substantial spending and may weigh on margins even while revenue grows.

Investment plans are not completed spending results
Alphabet’s fiscal 2025 filing said the company expected 2026 investment in technical infrastructure—including servers, network equipment and data centers—to increase significantly relative to 2025. This was a forward-looking expectation, not a final report of 2026 spending. For any company, compare infrastructure investment with cash generation and the returns those assets are expected to produce; spending plans alone do not prove that investment will pay off.
How to decide whether an AI stock is worth its price
A promising business and an attractive stock are different things. Even a company with real demand can be a poor investment at a price that already assumes unusually strong growth. A practical review should connect reported results to the expectations embedded in the share price.
- Separate recognized revenue from momentum claims. Identify whether a figure is reported revenue for a completed period, an annualized estimate, a forecast or a company-wide total. Check what products and customers it includes.
- Look for evidence that demand converts into repeat business. Paid seats and cloud revenue are useful adoption signals, but also assess whether customers renew, expand usage and pay enough to support profitable growth. The figures cited above do not answer every one of those questions.
- Assess margins alongside investment. Compare gross and operating margins, capital expenditures and cash flow over time. Consider whether infrastructure spending is enabling profitable sales or outpacing the returns the business can earn.
- Check customer and partner concentration. A large partner relationship can be valuable, but reliance on a small number of customers or distribution partners creates exposure. Look for concentration disclosures and consider how much reported growth depends on those relationships.
- Compare valuation with plausible results. Review share price, valuation measures such as price-to-earnings or price-to-cash-flow where appropriate, and the growth needed to justify them. A valuation is meaningful only in relation to earnings quality, cash generation, risks and credible future performance.
- Fit the risk to your own plan. Decide how much volatility and potential loss you can tolerate, how diversified your portfolio is, and whether an individual stock fits your time horizon. These are general considerations, not personalized investment advice.
What can be concluded right now
The reported figures support the view that AI-related demand is affecting major companies’ businesses and investment plans. They do not establish which AI-related stock is cheap, which will outperform, or whether now is the right entry point. The information available here does not include contemporaneous share prices, valuation multiples or comparable market benchmarks, and it does not provide a primary OpenAI financial statement to independently verify the annualized revenue figures. A company-specific buy decision therefore requires current valuation data and a fuller review of its risks and financial results.
