On October 3, 2026, the UAE’s Prosecutor General said investigators found that the co-pilot of Flydubai flight FZ1073 attacked the captain with a cockpit crash axe and tried to take control of the aircraft. He described the alleged conduct as an attempted terrorist act. The investigation was still underway; this is an official allegation, not a court verdict.

What happened on Flydubai flight FZ1073?

FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, when an incident occurred in the cockpit. The aircraft diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and landed there. Channel News Asia reported the route and diversion; the Associated Press also covered the initial incident on September 30.

In a statement reported on October 3, UAE Prosecutor General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said the co-pilot attacked the captain with a crash axe and attempted to seize the flight controls. The National reported the official’s account, as did Reuters via Investing.com.

Why did the flight divert to Saudi Arabia?

The aircraft diverted to Tabuk after the cockpit incident. The available reporting establishes where it landed, but does not provide a separate detailed account of the diversion decision or operational sequence. It does not establish that the aircraft was deliberately diverted by the co-pilot.

What did UAE investigators say about the co-pilot?

Al Shamsi characterized the alleged attack as an attempted terrorist act. That wording is the UAE prosecutor general’s description of the conduct under investigation, not a final judicial finding. UAE authorities said inquiries into the circumstances, motive and possible connections were continuing, alongside examination of physical and digital evidence.

What remains unconfirmed?

  • Motive and possible connections: Authorities said these remained under investigation as of October 3. Reporting does not establish a motive or wider network.
  • Identity: Reuters and AP coverage identified the co-pilot as Hamam al-Hammami and reported Omani nationality based on unnamed sources. Reuters said UAE authorities had not immediately confirmed the identity. Reuters’ report should therefore not be read as an official identification.
  • Number aboard: AP’s October 3 report says 182 people were aboard, while its September 30 report says 174. The reports do not resolve the discrepancy, so a settled count cannot be stated. See the October 3 AP report and the September 30 AP report.
