If your U.S. flight is cancelled, you can choose a refund instead of taking the airline’s rebooking or travel credit. Refund rights are separate from help with meals or a hotel, which depends on the airline’s commitments and whether the disruption was within its control. The latest DOT listing confirms that July 2026 Air Travel Consumer Report data was released on September 21, 2026, but the figures available here do not establish that delays or cancellations are up. What to do when your flight is delayed or cancelled
- Watch for airline notices. Check the email address, phone number, and app notifications attached to your booking. DOT says airlines must notify travelers about cancellations and significant schedule changes, including their refund rights. Keep your phone charged and accessible so you can see an offer or status update.
- Review the airline’s offer before accepting it. Decide whether you want the alternative flight or transportation, or whether you prefer to decline and request a refund. Accepting a significantly changed itinerary generally means you are not entitled to a ticket-price refund under DOT’s refund rules.
- Check the airline’s commitments if the disruption may be controllable. Use the DOT dashboard to see what that carrier promises for meals, hotels, rebooking, or other help during controllable disruptions.
- Keep relevant records. Save the cancellation or schedule-change notice and the airline’s offer while you decide how to proceed. For a permanently cancelled flight tied to airline insolvency, DOT advises considering a credit-card issuer chargeback, checking whether travel insurance addresses insolvency, or filing a proof of claim in bankruptcy court.
Can you get a refund if your flight is cancelled?
Yes. Under DOT rules, if the airline cancels your flight and you choose not to travel or accept an alternative, you are entitled to a refund of the ticket price. The right applies regardless of why the airline cancelled the flight. You can decline a rebooking, travel credit, voucher, or other compensation and request the refund instead.
For a credit-card purchase, the airline must provide the automatic refund within seven business days; for a cash purchase, within 20 business days. The period begins after the airline becomes aware that you do not accept its alternative.

- Your arrival is at least three hours later than scheduled on a domestic itinerary.
- Your arrival is at least six hours later than scheduled on an international itinerary.
- The itinerary changes to a different origin or destination airport.
- The airline adds more connection points.
- You are involuntarily downgraded.
These are examples of significant changes under DOT’s refund guidance, not a promise that every delay of any length qualifies. If you accept the significantly changed flight or alternative transportation, you are generally not entitled to a ticket-price refund under these rules. DOT’s refund guidance
Will the airline pay for meals or a hotel?
Not automatically in every disruption. A ticket refund is a separate right; meals, hotel accommodation, and other customer-service assistance depend on the airline’s commitments and the circumstances. DOT defines a controllable disruption as essentially one caused by the airline. Examples include maintenance or crew problems, cabin cleaning, baggage loading, and fueling.

Check the DOT Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard for your carrier’s stated commitments during controllable delays or cancellations, then consult its current customer-service plan. DOT says airlines must honor promises in those plans. A carrier’s dashboard entry is not a guarantee that every airline offers the same help, and a lack of a particular meal or hotel commitment does not remove your separate ticket-refund right.
Are flight delays and cancellations actually up?
The available DOT information does not substantiate a current increase. The department’s latest-news listing identifies a July 2026 Air Travel Consumer Report release posted September 21, 2026, but the listed material does not provide the July figures or a comparable prior-period calculation. Without matching data, it would be misleading to say that disruptions are up. DOT’s latest-news page

Historical figures in a December 2024 DOT rulemaking document, attributed to BTS airline-filed data for U.S. reporting carriers, show why it matters to separate cancellations from delays:

The cancellation count and rate fell between 2022 and 2023, while the count and share of delayed flights that were delayed three hours or more rose. These are different measures, and the long-delay percentages use delayed flights—not all scheduled flights—as their denominator. How to compare airline performance fairly
DOT’s Air Travel Consumer Report covers nonstop operated and marketed scheduled-service flights between U.S. points, including territories, for the 14 U.S. carriers that meet the revenue reporting threshold. In the report, a flight is on time if it operates less than 15 minutes after its scheduled time; most tables use gate-arrival times. Cancellation tables count operations and cancellations, while other tables categorize delay causes.
For a meaningful comparison, use the same reporting period, geography, carrier set, and denominator. Look separately at cancellation rate, on-time arrival rate, and delay duration, and account for route and airport context. The customer-service dashboard compares amenities and commitments; it is not, by itself, a ranking of operational reliability. DOT’s October 2025 ATCR, revised December 2025
