Flickr no longer offers 1 TB of free storage. Free accounts now use item-count limits, and separate download rules restrict access to some full-size files. If you still use a free account, check how many items you have and whether you can download the file sizes you need.
What happened to Flickr’s 1 TB free storage?
Flickr’s 1 TB free-storage model is historical. In 2018, the company replaced it with a cap of 1,000 uploaded photos and videos for free accounts. Flickr said that counting items was easier than asking users to calculate gigabytes, explaining, “Counting photos is simpler and more intuitive.” It also said more than 97% of free members had fewer than 1,000 photos at the time.
Flickr’s December 2018 notice set February 5, 2019 as the point when items above the limit were at risk of deletion. The historical policy also restricted further uploads for accounts over the cap. That deadline has passed; the current rules, rather than the old notice, determine what a free account can store today.
How many items can a free Flickr account store now?
Flickr’s Help Center material updated March 4, 2026 says free-account limits apply regardless of privacy setting and identifies Pro as the option for unlimited storage. Its current onboarding page describes the free allowance as up to 1,000 public and safe photos or videos, plus up to 50 non-public items, including private or restricted content. These are item limits, not a 1 TB quota.

Because the current descriptions distinguish public and safe items from non-public content, do not treat “1,000” as a universal count for every combination of privacy and content settings. Check Flickr’s current account limits and the status of your items in your account before relying on a particular total.
Can free members still download their original photos?
Not in every case. In a service announcement dated April 15, 2025, Flickr said that, starting May 15, 2025, free accounts could no longer download original or large-size images larger than 1024 pixels. Medium and smaller sizes remained downloadable.

Flickr’s stated exceptions are Creative Commons photos, which remain downloadable in all sizes unless they are private, and Flickr Commons members. The restriction concerns downloads and is separate from how many items a free account may store. Flickr also says users can request account data, including originals, through the Flickr Data section.

Check your item count and account limits
Review your account’s photos and videos, including their privacy and content settings, against Flickr’s current free-account rules. If you are near the applicable limit, avoid assuming that the former 1 TB allowance still applies.

Download files you may need before leaving
If you plan to close or stop using Flickr, request your account data through the Flickr Data section and verify that the export includes the files you need. For free accounts, the download-size restrictions that took effect May 15, 2025 can affect direct downloads of originals and large images; Flickr’s stated exceptions apply to Creative Commons photos under the conditions above and to Flickr Commons members.
