A fixed deal gives rate certainty for its term; a variable tariff can change, but covered default tariffs are subject to Ofgem’s cap on unit rates and standing charges. Oil-price movements do not translate directly or predictably into a household bill. Compare the actual tariff rates and charges against your own use, contract terms and appetite for risk.
What rising oil prices mean for gas and electricity tariffs
Oil prices alone are not a reliable guide to what you will pay for household mains energy. Wholesale gas prices can affect household tariffs, and gas-fired power stations can influence wholesale electricity prices through marginal-cost pricing. But the connection varies with market conditions: the available evidence does not establish a formula or percentage by which a given oil-price rise passes through to a British household bill.
Ofgem said the price-cap rise for October to December 2026 reflected higher wholesale gas prices amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East. That links the cap change to wholesale gas in that period; it does not show that an oil benchmark directly caused the increase. The House of Commons Library explains how gas-fired generation may set wholesale electricity prices. Ofgem’s October–December 2026 price-cap announcement and the Commons Library’s introduction to the domestic energy market provide the relevant context.
How fixed and variable tariffs differ
| Tariff | What changes during the deal | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed | The agreed unit rates and standing charges stay the same for the contract term, subject to the contract’s terms. | You gain rate certainty, but may pay more than on a variable tariff if variable rates later fall. Check the term and any exit fee. |
| Variable or default | Rates can change. For covered Great Britain households on default tariffs, Ofgem caps unit rates and standing charges, reviewing the cap quarterly. | You may benefit if rates fall, but your rates can also rise when the cap changes. The cap does not limit how much energy you use or your total bill. |
Ofgem’s explanation of the energy price cap sets out what it covers. The cap is not a ceiling on total spending: usage still determines the consumption part of the bill, alongside standing charges.

What the current price cap tells you—and what it does not
For 1 October to 31 December 2026, Ofgem reported a 4% increase in the price cap for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit. Its illustrative average Direct Debit rates for that period are:
| Charge | Illustrative average rate | Period and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity unit rate | 26.32p per kWh | 1 October–31 December 2026; Direct Debit average; electricity VAT is removed for this specified period. |
| Gas unit rate | 7.97p per kWh | 1 October–31 December 2026; Direct Debit average; includes 5% VAT. |
| Electricity standing charge | 54.83p per day | 1 October–31 December 2026; Direct Debit average. |
| Gas standing charge | 29.68p per day | 1 October–31 December 2026; Direct Debit average. |
These are illustrative averages, not a quote for your home or a forecast. Applicable rates vary by region, meter and payment type. Because electricity VAT treatment changed for the stated period while gas remains subject to 5% VAT, comparisons with earlier periods need that qualification. Check Ofgem’s current unit rates and standing charges alongside your supplier’s actual offer.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
How to decide whether a fixed offer is worth it
- Gather your actual usage. Use your annual gas and electricity consumption in kWh, plus your current unit rates and daily standing charges. Use the figures on your bill or account, not a typical-household estimate.
- Calculate each tariff’s annualized cost. For each fuel, multiply annual kWh by the offer’s unit rate, then add its daily standing charge multiplied by 365. Add the gas and electricity results. Apply the same method to your current tariff, using rates that apply to your region, meter and payment method.
- Compare the rates, not just a headline annual bill. Check whether the fixed unit rates and standing charges sit above or below your current variable rates and the applicable regional cap rates. A typical annual figure cannot predict your own total because usage differs.
- Read the contract terms. Note the fixed period, any exit fee, payment method requirements and any conditions that could change the rates. Consider whether you may move or want the option to switch before the term ends.
- Weigh certainty against flexibility. A fix can shield its agreed rates from later increases during the term. If variable rates fall, however, the fixed deal may leave you paying more; a variable tariff preserves the possibility of benefiting from a fall but also exposes you to future rate changes.
For a deeper explanation of fixed-tariff trade-offs and switching considerations, see the House of Commons Library’s briefing on help with energy bills.
If you use heating oil instead of mains gas
Heating oil is a separate case: it is not covered by the GB energy price cap. Its price can move quickly with fuel markets and also varies with location, season and delivery timing. A mains-gas tariff comparison or the Ofgem cap figures above do not apply to heating oil. Ofgem explains the distinction in its guidance on energy costs for households not protected by the price cap.

Who this guidance applies to
This comparison concerns domestic mains gas and electricity in Great Britain. Ofgem’s domestic price-cap rules should not be assumed to apply to Northern Ireland, business supply, heat networks, LPG or heating oil; those arrangements require separate guidance.
