But there is no evidence-based universal top five: “important” depends on the measure, and the available evidence does not establish a definitive ranking.
What makes a job important to society?
A useful way to assess a job is to ask what essential need it meets, how people would be affected if the work stopped, and whether its benefits extend beyond the worker and immediate customer. The World Bank’s World Development Report 2013 describes these wider effects as job spillovers. A job may create positive spillovers when its benefits reach people beyond those directly involved in the work.
These questions are a way to compare roles, not a validated numerical scale. They also leave room for another important question: whether the work is visible and whether workers are treated with dignity and protected from harm.
Five jobs with a strong claim to social importance
1. Healthcare workers
Doctors and other healthcare workers support people’s health and ability to live and work. In the World Bank report’s account of surveys in China, Colombia, Egypt, and Sierra Leone, respondents often named doctors as jobs important to society. Those responses describe public perceptions in those countries; they do not prove that healthcare workers hold a universal first place in an objective ranking.

2. Teachers
Teachers help people develop knowledge and skills that can benefit them well beyond the classroom. The same World Bank account found that teachers were often named as socially important. Respondents’ preferred jobs differed from the jobs they considered important to society, a reminder that social value and individual career preference are not the same thing.
3. Food producers
People who grow, raise, harvest, and otherwise produce food help meet a basic human need. If food production stopped for an extended period, households and communities would face serious consequences. This is a reasoned example based on the importance of the need it serves, not a role ranked by the World Bank report or measured against the other jobs here.
4. Sanitation workers
Sanitation workers help prevent human waste from remaining in places where it can threaten health and make daily life unsafe. A 2019 briefing by the International Labour Organization, WaterAid, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization estimated that people produce more than 350 million tonnes of human waste each year. The organizations wrote: “Ensuring that our contact with human waste ends when we leave the toilet is one of the most important jobs in society, and yet around the world sanitation workers remain mostly unseen and unappreciated.” The statement belongs to the organizational briefing, not to an individual speaker.
Sanitation work also shows why importance and recognition must be considered separately. The briefing describes workers whose conditions range from protected employment to marginalization, poverty, and discrimination. The Sanitation Workers Hub reports that, according to official data, India averaged one sanitation worker death every five days between 2017 and late 2018. That figure concerns India and that historical period; the Hub says global statistics are unavailable, so it should not be read as a current or worldwide rate.

5. Workers who maintain water and power systems
People who keep water and power systems operating support services that households, businesses, healthcare facilities, and other institutions rely on. If that work stopped, the effects could quickly reach people far beyond any one customer. This is a reasoned example of essential infrastructure work, not a measured or sourced ranking of utility workers against the other roles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a definitive top-five ranking
The World Bank report helps explain how people think about jobs; it does not publish a definitive list of five occupations that are objectively most important. Its survey account is limited to responses in China, Colombia, Egypt, and Sierra Leone, where teachers and doctors were often identified as socially important. The other examples here are selected because they support basic needs, not because evidence establishes that they outrank every other occupation.
Rank #4
Importance alone also does not tell us whether a job is safe, fairly compensated, respected, or adequately protected. The sanitation briefing makes this distinction particularly clear: essential work can remain unseen, while the people doing it face poor or discriminatory conditions.
