In a South China Morning Post ranking published in September 2021, IU placed first, Lee Hyori second and Sandara Park third among the female K-pop idols covered. BoA, Bae Suzy and Yoona shared the next position at an estimated US$25 million, so the source does not establish a unique fifth-place pick. These are media estimates—not verified personal net worth figures—and the available reporting does not establish that every person on the list is “self-made.”
Who appeared among the wealthiest female K-pop idols in 2021?
The figures below reflect estimates reported in 2021, not audited disclosures. The South China Morning Post (SCMP) published a seven-person ranking on September 9, 2021; Liputan6 summarized the list and reported several figures as ranges. Because the two outlets do not agree on every amount, the table distinguishes their estimates rather than combining them.
| Idol | 2021 estimate and source | What the ranking supports |
| IU | US$31–45 million, Liputan6 | SCMP ranked her first. Liputan6 reported a range, not a confirmed balance. |
| Lee Hyori | US$30–40 million, Liputan6 | SCMP ranked her second. Liputan6 reported a range. |
| Sandara Park (Dara) | About US$30 million, Liputan6 | SCMP ranked her third. The amount is an outlet estimate. |
| BoA | About US$25 million, Liputan6 | Tied with Bae Suzy and Yoona in the SCMP list. |
| Bae Suzy | About US$25 million, Liputan6 | Tied with BoA and Yoona in the SCMP list. |
| Yoona | About US$25 million, SCMP | Tied with BoA and Bae Suzy in the SCMP list. |
The title’s five-person framing cannot resolve the tie among BoA, Bae Suzy and Yoona: the cited ranking places all three at approximately US$25 million. Listing all three is more faithful to the evidence than choosing one without a supported tie-breaker. The estimates also are not directly comparable: Liputan6 gives ranges for IU and Lee Hyori, while other entries are single approximate amounts.
Why the net-worth figures are uncertain
These numbers come from entertainment coverage, not public financial statements. The reports do not show a consistent calculation of assets, debts, taxes, royalties, contract terms or income splits. They therefore cannot establish anyone’s exact wealth or support a precise comparison of personal finances.

Other outlets reported conflicting amounts and rankings. For example, Nubia Magazine gave IU an estimate of US$31 million and Lee Hyori US$35 million, placing them in a different order from SCMP’s ranking. Those discrepancies are a reason to treat the figures as estimates rather than settled facts.
A later example illustrates the uncertainty: PEP.ph reported in October 2022 that Sandara Park reacted negatively to a circulated claim that her net worth was KRW 30 billion and questioned the figure. That reported reaction does not reveal her actual wealth, but it underscores that a widely repeated estimate is not confirmation.

What their careers tell us—and what they do not
IU
Coverage connects IU’s career to music, songwriting, acting and endorsements. Soompi reported in 2017 that she participated in writing lyrics for every song on Palette and wrote and produced its title track. That is useful career context, but it does not establish how much the album—or any other activity—contributed to her finances in 2021.
Lee Hyori
Reports associate Lee Hyori’s income context with music and endorsements. Soompi reported that she was South Korea’s highest-paid female singer in 2006 when she signed with Mnet Media. That is a historical claim attributed to Soompi and dated to 2006, not a current earnings figure or proof of her 2021 net worth.
Rank #3
Sandara Park, BoA and Bae Suzy
The 2021 coverage associates these artists with music and other entertainment work, including endorsements. It does not quantify how much any particular channel added to their personal wealth. The same caution applies to Yoona: the ranking supplies an estimate, not a breakdown of her assets or earnings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does “self-made” accurately describe the list?
The ranking evidence does not consistently define “self-made” or substantiate that classification for each artist. It discusses careers and possible income channels, but does not document family wealth, starting resources, ownership stakes or a common test for the label. Treat “self-made” here as the title’s framing, not as a verified finding about all five people.
