Alphabet’s Q2 2026 results show strong revenue and operating-income growth, led by Google Cloud, but they do not by themselves establish whether GOOGL or GOOG is a good buy at its current price. The quarter’s reported net income and diluted EPS were boosted by large investment gains, while rising infrastructure spending, financing choices and legal exposure add risks investors should weigh. “Google stock” means Alphabet Inc. stock: Google is its largest business, and Alphabet is the public parent.
What Alphabet’s latest reported quarter shows
Alphabet reported results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, in its Q2 earnings release on July 22 and its Form 10-Q. Those results are company-reported figures, not a current share quote or a forecast. The release describes the figures as unaudited and cautions that past results are not an indication of future performance.
| Q2 2026 measure | Reported result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Alphabet revenue | $119.796 billion | Up 24% |
| Operating income | $40.770 billion | Up 30% |
| Operating margin | 34% | 32% in Q2 2025 |
| Google Services revenue | $94.540 billion | Up 15% |
| Google Cloud revenue | $24.768 billion | Up 82% |
Alphabet reports Google through Google Services and Google Cloud; its non-Google businesses are grouped as Other Bets, while shared AI research and development is reported in Alphabet-level activities. Google Services is a broad segment, so its 15% growth should not be read as a Search-only growth rate.
How much of the earnings jump came from operations?
Net income available to common stockholders was $112.107 billion, and diluted EPS was $9.11. Those headline figures substantially reflect investment gains rather than just the performance of Alphabet’s operating businesses: other income was $97.983 billion and included $99.0 billion of net gains on equity securities, primarily unrealized.
#1 Best Overall
For assessing the quarter’s underlying business momentum, operating income and the operating margin are more informative starting points than the $9.11 EPS figure alone. That does not make the investment gains irrelevant: they affect reported earnings, but their size and unrealized nature mean investors should not assume the same contribution will recur. A comparison with “normalized” EPS would require a stated adjustment method; no single adjusted figure is appropriate without one.
Is Google Cloud growth translating into profit?
Google Cloud generated $24.768 billion of revenue and $8.814 billion of operating income in Q2 2026. Its operating income was $2.826 billion in the year-earlier quarter. Dividing the reported quarterly operating income by revenue gives an approximately 35.6% segment operating margin; that is a calculation from Alphabet’s figures, not a margin metric quoted by the company.
Rank #2
The combination of faster revenue growth and higher operating income is evidence of improving scale and profitability in the reported quarter. It does not establish that the pace will continue, or that all AI-related investment is already earning an adequate return. Google Cloud is one business within Alphabet, and its results should be considered alongside the broader company’s growth and spending.
Is Alphabet’s AI spending paying off?
Alphabet’s results provide encouraging signals, particularly Cloud’s growth and increased operating income, but they do not isolate how much of either result came from AI or prove the return on AI investment. CEO Sundar Pichai said in the July 22, 2026 earnings release, “Our AI investments are redefining what’s possible across every part of our business.” That is management’s view, not evidence of a particular financial return.

Spending is substantial. Capital expenditures were $44.9 billion in Q2 and $80.6 billion in the first half of 2026, primarily for technical infrastructure. Alphabet said it expected 2026 investment in technical infrastructure to increase significantly relative to 2025. The investment could support future products and capacity, but it also raises the importance of utilization, cash generation and the cost of operating and depreciating infrastructure. Alphabet’s quarterly filing warns that investment in businesses, AI-optimized infrastructure and AI integration may not prove commercially viable or provide adequate returns.
How is Alphabet funding investment, and what could it mean per share?
Alphabet reported $242.5 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term marketable securities as of June 30, 2026. It also raised capital and issued debt during the quarter, so investors should consider financing and share-count consequences alongside the cash balance.
Rank #4
- In June 2026, common and mandatory convertible preferred stock issuances generated aggregate net proceeds of $49.6 billion. The preferred securities’ mandatory conversion makes future share issuance a relevant consideration.
- Q2 senior-note issuance generated net proceeds of $20.3 billion, bringing financing obligations as well as cash proceeds.
- Alphabet had a $40.0 billion at-the-market common-stock program available, but reported no ATM sales through June 30, 2026. The available capacity was not the same as shares already issued.
For a long-term investor, the question is not simply whether Alphabet can fund its plans. It is whether infrastructure and AI investment produce returns that justify their cost without unduly weakening cash generation or per-share outcomes. New common shares can dilute existing ownership; preferred conversion can also affect the share count, while debt adds interest obligations.

Alphabet reported that a previously accrued $5.2 billion EU Android-related fine and interest was paid in July 2026. It also accrued $2.1 billion in Q2 legal charges related to the PriceRunner matter. These are distinct legal developments, and the payment of an already accrued amount should not be confused with a new Q2 operating expense.
Best Value
Alphabet’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q and FY2025 Form 10-K describe risks that include competition and regulatory outcomes, litigation, execution and infrastructure challenges, and uncertainty about whether AI investments will succeed. The annual filing also discusses AI-related inaccuracies and harmful content, privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual-property exposure, and volatility in investment fair values. Product changes may affect user behavior and revenue trends; assumptions about asset useful lives can also influence expenses and reported results.
What is the difference between GOOGL and GOOG?
Alphabet’s listed common-stock symbols are GOOGL for Class A shares and GOOG for Class C shares. The symbols identify two share classes of the same public parent, not separate Google businesses. The available company disclosures establish those ticker-class pairings, but the voting-rights terms are not stated here; investors should check Alphabet’s current share-class disclosures before treating the classes as interchangeable or choosing between them.
Is Google stock a buy?
The operating picture is strong in the latest reported quarter: revenue and operating income grew, and Cloud delivered particularly rapid growth alongside higher operating income. The counterweights are material: EPS was lifted by primarily unrealized investment gains, infrastructure spending is rising, financing may affect future per-share results, and legal and regulatory risks remain.
A buy decision also depends on the price paid. No current share quote, valuation multiple or analyst target is established by the financial results summarized here, so they cannot support a price-specific valuation conclusion. Before deciding, compare the current GOOGL or GOOG price with an earnings measure that explicitly addresses investment gains, examine cash flow against capital spending, and assess whether future growth could justify the price without assuming that Q2 growth rates will persist. A single P/E ratio is not a complete conclusion unless its share-price date, earnings basis and treatment of investment gains are specified.
