Re:

Finom Raises €115 Million to Expand Its European SMB Finance Platform

Finom’s €115 million Series C gives the European SMB-finance platform capital to expand—but its EMI status, growth claims and lending ambitions require careful scrutiny.

Finom announced a €115 million Series C on June 23, 2025, led by AVP (formerly AXA Venture Partners). Headline Growth joined existing investors General Catalyst, Northzone, and Cogito Capital. The funding gives Finom more capital to expand its business-account, payments, invoicing, expense-management, foreign-exchange, accounting-automation, and early lending products across Europe.

But the round is not proof that Finom is already profitable, a bank, or on track to serve one million businesses. Its reported growth metrics are company claims, and the more important test is whether it can turn customer acquisition into durable, compliant and profitable usage.

What Finom raised

The financing was an equity Series C round announced on June 23, 2025. AVP led the round, with Headline Growth participating as a new investor and General Catalyst, Northzone and Cogito Capital returning.

AVP said Finom’s total funding had passed €300 million. TechCrunch reported that the company had also recently received approximately €92.7 million ($105 million) from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund. That investment was separate from the €115 million Series C and should not be described as one €207.7 million equity round.

General Catalyst’s capital used a nontraditional growth-financing structure. Rather than taking equity in the conventional manner, the fund expected to recover its investment from value generated by growth activities. Finom could use the capital for marketing and customer acquisition. The available reporting does not justify confidently classifying the arrangement as ordinary debt.

The deal is substantial, but it does not disclose Finom’s updated valuation. Nor does it establish that the company is profitable.

What Finom is building

Finom is better understood as an integrated SMB-finance platform than simply as a challenger bank. Its announced product set includes:

  • Business accounts with local IBANs;
  • Payments and money transfers;
  • Invoicing;
  • Expense management and spending controls;
  • Foreign exchange;
  • AI-enabled accounting and financial-intelligence tools; and
  • Early-stage credit and lending products.

The broader ambition is to bring banking, invoicing, bookkeeping-related administration, tax workflows, reporting and credit into one operating layer for small businesses. That could create more revenue per customer than a basic current account. It also creates more compliance, credit, accounting and country-specific execution challenges.

Where the funding will go

Finom said the money would support expansion in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, alongside product development and continued customer acquisition. The company also identified lending pilots and possible acquisitions as uses of capital.

The acquisition language described a possible strategy, not a completed transaction. There was no evidence in the cited announcement that Finom had agreed to or completed an acquisition using the round.

Lending was initially being tested with Dutch businesses. That is important: a Dutch lending pilot is not evidence that Finom had become a major pan-European lender.

How credible are Finom’s growth claims?

Finom and its investors reported more than 125,000 business customers, revenue that doubled in 2024, positive unit economics in every market and a workforce of more than 500 people. Finom also set a target of reaching one million European business customers by the end of 2026.

These figures need to be read precisely:

  • Revenue growth is not profitability. Doubling revenue says nothing by itself about operating expenses, cash flow or net income.
  • Positive unit economics are not the same as positive company-wide earnings. Finom did not publicly disclose detailed unit economics in the cited coverage.
  • Customers may not mean active or paying customers. The reported figure does not establish usage frequency, revenue contribution or retention.
  • The million-customer figure is a target. It is an ambition, not an achieved result.

As of the evidence available for this article, there is no basis to state that Finom reached one million customers, became profitable, completed acquisitions or materially expanded lending by August 2026. Those outcomes require newer company disclosures or independent reporting.

Why European SMB finance is attractive

Small companies commonly use separate tools for banking, invoicing, expense claims, payments and bookkeeping. Traditional banks may provide reliable business accounts and lending, but their digital workflows can be less integrated or slower to adapt.

Europe offers a large opportunity, but it is not one uniform market. Businesses operate across different languages, tax rules, payment practices, regulatory regimes and accounting systems. A platform that works well in France may still need substantial localization for Germany, Italy, Spain or the Netherlands.

That fragmentation is both Finom’s opportunity and its execution risk. The company is not merely trying to replace a current account. It is trying to become the software layer through which businesses handle routine financial administration.

Finom is not automatically a bank

Finom operated primarily under an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) model in its main markets, rather than as a conventional full-service deposit-taking bank. An EMI can provide regulated payment and electronic-money services, but an EMI license is not equivalent to a banking license.

The practical consequences can include differences in:

  • How customer funds are safeguarded;
  • Whether balances qualify for a deposit-guarantee scheme;
  • Which entity legally holds or provides a product;
  • How lending is funded and regulated; and
  • What happens if a provider or banking partner fails.

TechCrunch reported that Finom’s partnership with Solaris, which holds a full banking license in Germany, had ended earlier in 2025. That makes it particularly important for customers to check the exact legal entity, country terms, safeguarding arrangements and product provider before moving operating cash.

A local IBAN provides local payment functionality. It does not, by itself, make the provider a bank.

What lending adds—and what it risks

Lending can increase revenue and make a financial platform harder for customers to leave. It also introduces credit losses, fraud, collections, underwriting and country-specific regulatory risks that are not present in the same form for payments and invoicing.

Finom’s initial Dutch pilot should therefore be viewed as an experiment in extending the platform, not as proof that lending is available across Europe. Customers should check whether credit is supplied directly or by a partner, whether personal guarantees or collateral are required, and what the total cost of borrowing will be.

Finom’s competitive position

Legacy banks

Traditional banks generally retain advantages in deposits, relationship management, corporate credit, treasury services, payroll banking and established support networks. Finom may offer faster onboarding, more integrated software and quicker product iteration.

The likely outcome is not that every business abandons its bank. An SMB may use Finom for operational payments, invoices and expenses while keeping a traditional bank for deposits, lending or more complex cash management.

Qonto

Qonto is the closest direct European SMB-platform comparison. It offers business accounts, cards, transfers, invoicing and accounting integrations. Its English pricing page viewed on August 18, 2026 displayed annual-billing-equivalent plans of €9 per month for Basic, €19 for Smart and €39 for Premium, excluding VAT. Pricing and features vary by country, plan, billing frequency and usage.

Qonto’s scale and funding provide meaningful competition. Finom’s differentiation depends on whether its product bundle, local execution and financial-automation tools deliver better value for particular markets and business types.

Revolut Business

Revolut Business is especially relevant for companies prioritizing multicurrency accounts, cards, foreign exchange and international payments. It may be less suitable for companies seeking deep country-specific invoicing, tax and bookkeeping workflows. Eligibility and pricing vary by country and plan.

Wise Business

Wise Business is a strong alternative for international payments, currency conversion and paying overseas suppliers or contractors. Its transaction-oriented model is less directly comparable with a full account-plus-invoicing-and-accounting platform. Fees vary by country, currency and transaction type.

N26 Business

N26 Business can suit eligible freelancers and solo operators seeking a straightforward digital account. It may be less appropriate for multi-user businesses requiring invoice automation, payment approvals, accountant access and extensive finance-team controls.

What SMBs should check before switching

  1. Legal status: Is the provider an EMI, a bank or using a banking partner? Which legal entity signs the contract?
  2. Safeguarding: Are funds safeguarded, and are they covered by a deposit-guarantee scheme?
  3. Country coverage: Is a local IBAN available, and are invoicing, tax and reporting features supported in your country?
  4. Payment costs: Check included transfers, instant-payment availability, international fees, card limits and cash-withdrawal charges.
  5. Accounting: Confirm supported software integrations, accountant access, reconciliation, invoice capture and audit exports.
  6. Team controls: Compare users, cards, spending limits, virtual cards and approval workflows.
  7. Credit terms: Check availability, pricing, collateral, personal guarantees and whether a partner provides the loan.
  8. Operational resilience: Review support channels and keep a backup banking relationship in case of a compliance review, account freeze or delayed payment.

AI categorization and invoice automation can reduce administrative work, but they do not replace statutory accounting, tax advice or professional review where those are required.

What this round must prove

The funding gives Finom credible investor backing and significant resources. It does not settle the business case. Investors and customers will ultimately want evidence that Finom can:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Convert acquisition spending into active, paying and retained customers;
  • Scale consistently across five different national environments;
  • Improve financial workflows without sacrificing accuracy or compliance;
  • Expand lending without excessive credit losses; and
  • Use acquisitions, if pursued, to accelerate the platform rather than distract management.

The “European fintech is heating up” framing should therefore be treated cautiously. This round shows strong backing for Finom and the broader SMB-finance opportunity. One company’s financing does not, by itself, prove a sector-wide funding revival or broad profitability across European fintech.

For business owners, the sensible conclusion is practical: Finom may be a serious operating-finance alternative, particularly for European SMEs seeking integrated payments and administration. It should still be evaluated alongside a traditional bank, especially where deposit protection, complex credit, treasury services or country-specific support matter.
