The financial challenge is not only tuition: rent, food, transport, and required materials can all strain a student’s budget. How work affects study depends on hours, schedule flexibility, course load, financial support, and personal circumstances—not simply on whether a student has a job.
What financial challenges do working students face?
Students often have to meet education costs and ordinary living costs from a mix of wages, savings, family support, grants, and loans. Those costs can be difficult to predict. In its evaluation of the Canada Student Loans Program, Employment and Social Development Canada reported that surveyed borrowers often underestimated expenses such as textbooks and required materials, transportation, rent, and food. The report’s findings concern its surveyed borrower populations, not all students.
In Scotland, financial strain was linked to practical trade-offs as well as worry. Among higher national and undergraduate respondents in the Scottish Government’s 2023–2024 Student Finance and Wellbeing Study, 29% said financial difficulties made it hard to buy course materials and 20% said they could not cover travel costs. Those figures are self-reported impacts from the study’s Scottish student groups, not causal estimates for every student. Scottish Government report, section 11.
Why do students work while enrolled?
Many students work because wages help cover both education and living expenses. In the Canadian evaluation, 55% of surveyed borrowers worked during weeks when they also attended classes. Of those working borrowers, 87% named education and living costs as their main reason for working. These results describe the program’s surveyed borrower population and survey evidence from 2020. Employment and Social Development Canada’s 2021 evaluation summarizes the finding: “Most students did paid work while studying to help cover their education and living expenses.”

Work can also pay for discretionary spending or study-related fees. In a University of Basel student association survey conducted from May 13 to August 11, 2025, 59% of 791 bachelor’s and master’s student respondents were employed. Among respondents who worked, 78.4% cited basic living costs, 76.5% discretionary costs, and 66.3% study-related fees as reasons. The survey was unweighted and advertised through association channels, so these are respondent figures—not representative estimates for all Basel students or students elsewhere. skuba’s survey report.
How can work and financial stress affect studying?
The pressures can show up in study time, attendance, concentration, grades, stress, and health. In Scotland, 61% of higher national and undergraduate respondents said financial difficulties affected their studies “a great deal” or “a fair amount.” Among those respondents, the most commonly reported impact was worry and stress (94%). Other reported impacts included needing to work in a paid job (49%), working extra hours (37%), missing classes (28%), and health problems (25%). These are self-reported impacts in the Scottish study, not evidence that financial difficulty alone caused each outcome. Scottish Government report, section 11.

Among working borrowers surveyed for Canada’s 2021 evaluation, 51% reported a negative impact of work on grades or academic performance, 7% reported a positive impact, and 32% reported both positive and negative impacts. The mix of responses matters: employment can create time pressure while also providing income or other benefits, and this survey does not establish that working has the same effect on every student. Employment and Social Development Canada.
In the Basel association survey, nearly half of employed respondents said job obligations had caused them to miss courses, and 73% reported moderate to high stress from combining work and study. Those results apply to the survey respondents, not to the whole university population. A Scottish focus-group participant identified as an estranged student described the mental load: “I wasn’t actually able to learn as much as I could have with being worried about going to work, then thinking about working and money situations.” Scottish Government report, section 11.

Does working while in college affect grades or completion?
It can, but the evidence does not support a blanket claim that student employment harms academic outcomes. Hours and intensity matter, and work is closely connected to students’ financial circumstances and opportunities. A 2024 meta-analysis of 69 studies found that estimates varied by context, publication selection, and how studies handled endogeneity. Its authors described the average effect as negative but economically inconsequential. Kroupova, Havranek, and Irsova, “Student Employment and Education: A Meta-Analysis”.
A July 2026 analysis by New Zealand’s Ministry of Education found completion outcomes were strongest at lower work levels and lower at higher intensity; outcomes were lower for students not working, and they fell as work intensity increased, with more variation at very high intensity. The ministry explicitly cautions: “The analysis does not identify whether working causes differences in completion.” The association could reflect financial pressure, labour-market opportunities, or other differences between students, as well as the amount they work. The findings apply to domestic tertiary students in New Zealand. Education Counts, July 2026.

That New Zealand analysis also found that part-time students, students below degree level, and Māori and Pacific Peoples students were more likely to be in higher-intensity employment. Full-time and degree-level students were more concentrated in lower-intensity work. These differences are a reminder that students’ study and employment choices are shaped by their circumstances, not just individual preference.

Financial strain and its effects are not evenly distributed. In Scotland, 68% of higher national and undergraduate students in the 20% most deprived areas said financial difficulties affected their studies a great deal or a fair amount, compared with 58% in the 80% least deprived areas. The same report discusses pressures from balancing paid work with study and caring or parenting responsibilities. Scottish Government report, section 11.

Support needs also differ. Canada’s evaluation highlights the role of federal loans and grants for groups including single parents and students with disabilities. A student’s ability to take on more paid hours may also depend on course level, whether they study full or part time, accommodation and travel costs, caring duties, and whether their job schedule can flex around classes.
What can students do when income and study demands collide?
A budget can make costs visible, but it cannot make an inadequate income sufficient. Start with realistic costs for the full study period rather than tuition alone, and distinguish recurring bills from one-time education expenses. Include rent, food, transport, required books and materials, fees, and the timing of bills and income.
- Check the funding mix. Compare expected wages with grants, loans, savings, and any family support you can rely on. Confirm eligibility, deadlines, and payment dates with the relevant institution or government program.
- Map work against the academic calendar. Note class times, assessment periods, travel time, and study blocks before accepting shifts. Ask whether hours can be reduced or schedules changed during high-demand weeks.
- Raise problems early. If work is causing missed classes or coursework delays, contact an academic adviser or student-support office to ask what options exist. If essential costs are unaffordable, ask the institution about emergency aid or other available support rather than assuming extra work is the only answer.
- Review the plan when costs change. Revisit the budget after rent, transport, course-material, or work-hour changes. A budget planner can organize estimates, but it cannot substitute for enough income or appropriate aid.
When can leaving a course be tied to money?
In Canada’s evaluation, 47% of surveyed borrowers who left without completing cited insufficient money for education and living costs as a reason. Among those who left, reported factors included not earning enough from employment (68%), unexpectedly higher living costs (64%), and unexpectedly higher education costs (56%). These factors may overlap; they are reported reasons, not mutually exclusive causes. Employment and Social Development Canada’s evaluation.
