Garrett Endicott, 22, of Warrensburg, Missouri, was the last of six defendants sentenced in a U.S. case involving cryptocurrency theft through SIM hijacking. He received 10 months in prison and was ordered to pay $121,549.37 in restitution, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on November 30, 2021.
How the SIM-hijacking scheme worked
SIM swapping targets control of a victim’s mobile phone number, rather than physically taking the victim’s phone. The DOJ described two routes used to take over a number: bribing a mobile carrier employee or impersonating the customer to persuade customer service to transfer the number to a SIM controlled by an attacker. The DOJ’s case announcement defines SIM hijacking, also called SIM swapping, as an identity-theft technique exploiting mobile phone numbers.
- Get the number transferred. A carrier employee is bribed or customer service is deceived into moving the victim’s number to an attacker-controlled SIM.
- Intercept account recovery. With the number under their control, the attackers can receive SMS verification codes and use password-reset processes tied to the phone number.
- Reach connected accounts. The DOJ said The Community used this access to get into email, cloud-storage and cryptocurrency-exchange accounts.
- Steal cryptocurrency. Access to exchange accounts enabled cryptocurrency theft. A phone-number takeover can therefore expose more than calls and texts when other accounts rely on that number for recovery or verification.
How much was stolen—and how losses differed
The DOJ described the group’s cryptocurrency theft as totaling tens of millions of dollars. That is the government’s aggregate description of the scheme, not a stated amount stolen from any one victim. Individual victim losses ranged from less than $2,000 to more than $5 million. For thefts attributed to defendants who were sentenced, the DOJ gave a range of approximately $50,000 to more than $9 million. Those figures describe different scopes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Sentences and restitution for the defendants
Endicott pleaded guilty and was the sixth and final defendant sentenced in the case. The DOJ’s November 30, 2021 announcement reported these U.S. sentences and restitution orders:

The DOJ announcement identifies restitution orders for the other defendants, but the information summarized here does not give their amounts; it would be misleading to infer them from Endicott’s order or from the scheme-wide loss figures. The defendants’ prison terms also do not by themselves establish the amount of cryptocurrency stolen by each person.

Acting U.S. Attorney Saima Mohsin said the defendants’ conduct caused millions of dollars in losses, and that some victims lost their entire retirement savings. The case illustrates a financial risk of using a mobile number as a recovery channel: if criminals take over that number, SMS codes and password resets may help them move from a phone account into other valuable accounts.
