Figure said an employee was deceived in a social-engineering attack and that attackers downloaded a limited number of files. Its later notice says personal information was obtained from databases containing loan and loan-inquiry data on January 28. Figure says it found no evidence that customer accounts or funds were accessed, but exposed identity and loan information could still enable phishing and identity theft.
A later analysis of allegedly leaked material found 967,200 unique email addresses associated with Figure customers. That is an email-address count from analyzed data, not a company-confirmed count of affected individuals.
What is Figure, and why might you have heard of it indirectly?
Figure provides technology-driven lending and financial services, including blockchain-enabled home-equity lines of credit, refinancing and crypto-backed loans. It also supplies origination, servicing, administration and technology services to partner lenders. You may therefore have a Figure relationship even if your loan, HELOC or refinancing was branded by another company. Figure’s description of its services appears in its individual breach notice: Figure notification letter.

What happened?
Figure said an employee was manipulated through social engineering. The attackers gained access to that employee’s account and downloaded files. Figure’s official notice says unauthorized activity involved queries of databases holding loan and loan-inquiry information. The company said it stopped the activity, engaged a cybersecurity firm and reported the incident to law enforcement.
ShinyHunters claimed responsibility and reportedly posted about 2.5 gigabytes of allegedly stolen data after Figure declined to pay a ransom. TechCrunch said it reviewed part of that material and saw names, home addresses, dates of birth and phone numbers. Those observations are not an official, exhaustive inventory of every affected record: TechCrunch’s initial report.

What information may be involved?
The information can vary by person. Figure’s individualized notice uses fields such as “your [data fields]” rather than stating that every recipient had every category. Notification materials list these categories as potentially involved:
Rank #2
- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
- Names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses
- Dates of birth
- Social Security numbers
- Loan account numbers and other loan information
A Nebraska filing describing a partner notification lists those possible fields: Nebraska filing. The leaked-data review separately reported seeing names, home addresses, dates of birth and phone numbers. Your own Figure letter is the best source for the categories Figure associates with you.

The most specific public estimate is 967,200 unique email addresses found by researcher Troy Hunt in analyzed leaked material. It suggests a far larger exposure than the phrase “limited number of files” might imply: one database export can contain hundreds of thousands of records.
That figure is not automatically 967,200 people. It could include duplicate or stale records, multiple relationships belonging to one person, partner contacts, applicants or other non-customer addresses. Figure’s cited official notice does not independently confirm that number as a nationwide count of affected individuals.

Were customer accounts or money accessed?
Figure says it found no evidence of unauthorized access to customer accounts or funds and that operations continued uninterrupted. That statement addresses direct account or funds access; it does not eliminate the risk of later fraud using exposed personal or loan data.
Potential follow-on risks include targeted phishing, fake loan-servicing or payoff instructions, fraudulent refinancing, account-recovery attacks and identity theft.

Was Okta breached?
ShinyHunters reportedly told TechCrunch that Figure was among organizations targeted in a campaign involving Okta single sign-on. That is an attacker claim. The confirmed public mechanism is social engineering of a Figure employee; available evidence does not establish that an Okta vulnerability or an Okta company breach caused this incident.

What Figure says it is doing
- Stopped the unauthorized activity and enhanced security measures.
- Hired a cybersecurity firm and notified law enforcement.
- Communicated with partners and affected individuals.
- Offered complimentary credit monitoring and identity-restoration services to people who receive a notice.
Use the enrollment instructions and contact details in your mailed or emailed notice. Do not use a phone number from a social-media advertisement or an unsolicited message.
What affected borrowers should do now
- Read your official notice. Confirm which data categories Figure says may relate to you and note the deadline and activation steps for any offered service.
- Activate monitoring only through the notice. Treat requests for payment, passwords, Social Security numbers or one-time codes as suspicious.
- Freeze your credit with all three U.S. bureaus. A freeze is generally free and restricts new-credit access until you temporarily lift it. Use each bureau’s official website, reached by typing its address yourself; do not rely on links in breach emails.
- Review your credit reports and accounts. Look for unfamiliar inquiries, new loans, address changes, collection accounts and unexpected account-recovery events.
- Watch existing loans. Because the affected databases included loan and loan-inquiry information, verify any refinancing, payoff, servicing or payment-change request through a trusted statement or phone number.
- Secure email and financial accounts. Change reused passwords, use unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication, especially on email accounts used for recovery.
- Respond quickly to identity theft. Preserve notices and suspicious messages and use current federal and credit-bureau identity-theft reporting channels if unauthorized activity appears.
Legal and regulatory developments
California’s attorney-general database lists the breach, and public complaints and law-firm announcements allege inadequate security or notification practices. Those filings are allegations and procedural developments—not findings that Figure violated the law or that any lawsuit has succeeded. The California filing is available at oag.ca.gov. A publicly available complaint is here.
How to interpret the headlines
- “Limited files” describes file count, not the number of records or people.
- 967,200 is a count of unique email addresses in analyzed leaked data, not a confirmed victim total.
- Potential exposure of Social Security numbers or loan information varied by individual.
- “No evidence” of account or funds access is not a guarantee that no later identity fraud will occur.
- ShinyHunters’ Okta explanation remains unverified by Figure or Okta in the cited material.
