December live cattle and lean hogs also ended lower. A contemporaneous report linked the cattle-futures pressure to White House comments about high beef prices and said stronger reported cash cattle trades helped limit live cattle losses.
How livestock futures closed on Oct. 17, 2025
The following are historical settlement figures for the Friday, Oct. 17, 2025 session, not current market quotes. Each contract represents a different livestock market, so the settlement prices should not be treated as directly comparable measures of value.
| Contract | Change on Oct. 17, 2025 | Settlement on Oct. 17, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| November feeder cattle | Down $9.25 per cwt | $371.70 per cwt |

| December lean hogs | Down 23 cents per cwt | $82.38 per cwt |
Among the three contracts listed in the close report, November feeder cattle had the largest stated daily decline: $9.25 per cwt.
Why feeder cattle futures fell
Successful Farming’s closing report, published at 2:48 p.m. Central Time on Oct. 17, attributed pressure on cattle futures to White House statements that high beef prices were being examined. Karl Setzer, partner at Consus Ag Consulting, said the announcement contributed to a flush of weak long positions, particularly in feeder cattle. This is the report’s contemporaneous explanation of the session, not evidence that political comments were the market’s sole cause.

Why live cattle losses were smaller
The same report said cash trades were reported $4–5 higher for live cattle and $7–9 higher for dressed sales. It described those stronger cash-trade reports as limiting losses in live cattle. December live cattle still closed down $6.05 per cwt at $241.83 per cwt.

An earlier update on the same page was published at 9:17 a.m. Central Time. It gave morning indications of $374.35 per cwt for feeder cattle, down $6.60, and $245.20 per cwt for live cattle, down $2.68. These were morning figures, not the session’s closing values; the later close report listed lower settlements and larger declines.
