Fed’s Williams Says AI Supply Squeeze Could Last Beyond Two Years

New York Fed President John Williams says AI-driven demand could keep chips, equipment and electricity supply-constrained beyond two years if the investment surge continues. He also sees one more 2026 rate hike as potentially appropriate.

New York Federal Reserve President John Williams says the supply shortfall in AI-related equipment could last longer than two years if demand continues at the expected pace. That is a conditional assessment, not a fixed end date or an official Federal Reserve forecast. Williams also said he has not changed his view that one more interest-rate increase could be appropriate in 2026, while he currently sees no reason to assume additional increases in 2027.

What Williams actually said

In an interview reported by Bloomberg and reproduced by Bitget News on October 14, 2026, Williams said, “I think it’s going to take longer. Assuming the demand kind of impulse continues as expected, and that’s a big assumption.” The comment refers to the time needed for manufacturers and infrastructure providers to expand supply to meet AI-driven demand.

Williams is the president of the New York Fed, but his comments are not a formal forecast approved by the Federal Open Market Committee. Earlier reporting shows why he is avoiding a precise timetable. Dow Jones reported on July 15 that he called the duration and magnitude of the imbalance “highly uncertain.”

The core issue is a race between demand and available capacity. “So far demand is outpacing supply in certain categories of goods,” Williams said. If demand cools, the shortage could ease sooner. If companies continue building data centers at the current pace, the bottleneck could persist beyond the two-year horizon.

Where the AI supply squeeze is appearing

The pressure is not limited to the most advanced processors. Associated Press reporting on July 13 described spillovers across several parts of the technology and energy supply chain.

Semiconductors and memory

AI servers require high-performance processors and large quantities of memory. Economists at JPMorgan Chase, as reported by AP, estimated that the cost of some computer-memory chips could rise by as much as 400% between 2024 and the end of 2026. That is an estimate for some memory products, not a forecast for every chip or every computer.

Higher component costs can reach consumer electronics when manufacturers pass along procurement expenses. The effect depends on the product, the amount of memory it uses, inventory purchased before the price increase, and whether buyers can delay an upgrade.

Data-center equipment

Large cloud and technology companies are ordering servers, networking equipment, cooling systems and power infrastructure simultaneously. AP estimated that Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms and Microsoft together could invest about $720 billion in 2026, mostly in data centers. The figure is an expectation reported by AP, not a completed spending total.

Electricity and grid capacity

Data centers consume substantial electricity, and adding them can increase demand for generation, transmission and local distribution. AP reported that U.S. electricity prices were 5.9% higher year over year in May 2026, citing the government consumer price index. Goldman Sachs, also cited by AP, forecast electricity-price increases of 6% in 2026 and 2027, followed by 3% in 2028. Forecasts can change as new generation comes online, projects are delayed or demand growth slows.

The inflation channels to watch

AI investment can affect inflation through several connected channels:

  • Input costs: Scarce processors, memory and specialized equipment raise costs for data-center operators and electronics manufacturers.
  • Capital-goods prices: When many buyers compete for the same servers, networking gear and construction capacity, suppliers have more pricing power.
  • Electricity: New data-center load can increase wholesale and retail power costs where supply and grid connections are constrained.
  • Downstream goods: Businesses may pass higher technology and energy costs to customers, although contracts, inventories and competition can delay or limit the pass-through.

Core inflation under the Fed’s preferred measure was 3.4% in May 2026, according to AP’s reporting. That reading includes many forces unrelated to AI, so it cannot be treated as a measure of AI inflation alone.

Why the Fed may respond with higher rates

Williams said, “If this creates a sustained impulse to demand relative to supply in inflation, I do think that’s the kind of situation where you don’t look through this.” In central-bank terms, a short-lived disruption may be tolerated while supply adjusts. A persistent period in which demand keeps exceeding supply is more likely to require policy action.

He also said, “I haven’t changed my view that it may be appropriate to have one more rate hike.” That statement describes his current judgment about 2026; it does not commit the FOMC to a particular meeting decision. Williams said he currently sees no reason to assume additional hikes in 2027.

Higher rates would make financing data-center construction and other capital projects more expensive. They would also tend to raise borrowing costs for households and businesses. But Williams cautioned against assuming that rate increases will automatically stop AI spending. Investors may remain relatively insensitive to borrowing costs if they expect large productivity gains or transformative returns from AI systems.

Three ways the outlook could develop

The following framework translates Williams’s conditional comments into the variables that matter. It is a way to assess the news, not a set of official Fed forecasts.

Scenario Supply-shortfall duration Dominant bottleneck Price pattern Interest-rate sensitivity Productivity outcome
Capacity catches up quickly Less than two years A temporary constraint in chips or equipment Prices rise, then stabilize as new capacity arrives Investment slows when financing costs rise Efficiency gains begin to offset costs sooner
Extended equipment squeeze Beyond two years Advanced processors, memory or data-center equipment Elevated prices persist while orders exceed production Spending remains strong because expected AI returns are high Benefits arrive gradually and do not immediately remove inflation pressure
Infrastructure and power constraint Beyond equipment lead times Electricity generation, transmission or local grid connections Utility and construction costs stay elevated even if chip supply improves Rate policy affects demand but cannot quickly build a power network Productivity gains depend on completing physical infrastructure

What this could mean for personal finances

Borrowing

If persistent AI-related demand contributes to higher inflation, the Fed could keep policy rates higher for longer or deliver the additional 2026 increase Williams considers possible. That would tend to affect variable-rate debt, new mortgages, auto loans and business credit before it affects existing fixed-rate loans. The timing and size of any pass-through depend on lenders and market conditions.

Household energy bills

Electricity costs are local, and a national index does not predict every utility bill. Areas hosting major data-center construction may face different generation, transmission and rate-case effects from regions with little new load. Check your utility’s published tariff and regulatory filings rather than applying the 5.9% national May figure directly to your household.

Computers and other electronics

Memory and other component costs can raise prices or reduce discounts on devices, but retailers may absorb part of an increase and product specifications vary. A buyer who does not need an immediate upgrade can compare total specifications and warranty terms instead of assuming every computer will rise by the same percentage.

Savings and cash planning

A higher policy-rate path can support better yields on some savings products, while increasing the cost of credit. Keep emergency cash accessible, review variable-rate balances and avoid making a major purchase solely on the assumption that either rates or electronics prices must move in one direction.

Key dates and evidence behind the warning

  1. July 13, 2026: AP reported the $720 billion 2026 investment expectation, memory-chip cost estimates and electricity-price spillovers.
  2. July 15, 2026: Dow Jones reported Williams describing the size and duration of AI supply-demand imbalances as highly uncertain.
  3. October 14, 2026: Bitget News, reproducing Cointelegraph reporting from a Bloomberg interview, reported Williams’s explicit view that the adjustment could take longer than two years and his current 2026 rate-hike stance.

What would change the outlook

Investors and households can follow five indicators: whether AI orders continue to exceed chip and equipment production; whether memory prices broaden beyond selected products; whether data-center projects secure power and grid connections; whether electricity inflation remains elevated after new capacity is added; and whether productivity gains begin to reduce unit costs. A slowdown in AI capital spending would shorten the likely shortage, while persistent orders combined with delayed power and factory capacity would extend it.

Williams’s warning therefore describes a risk-management problem rather than a countdown. The “beyond two years” language applies only if the demand impulse continues, and the magnitude of the eventual inflation and productivity effects remains uncertain.
