Re:

Farmers Should Budget for Ag-Chemical Tariff Risk, FBN Says

FBN’s reports point to chemical-price variability and tariff risk, but their historical data and forecasts are not current quotes or guaranteed increases for every farm.

Farmers should treat tariffs as a potential added cost—not assume every ag chemical has already risen by a set amount. FBN’s 2025 report described lower chemical prices in 2024 but warned that restocking and tariff costs could put pressure on future purchases. A later FBN forecast, reported in March 2026, projected a 4%–6% increase in overall chemical budgets; that is a forecast, not a measured increase for every farm. Current tariffs and landed prices depend on the product and its origin, and the available figures do not establish a universal rate for October 2026.

What FBN’s reports say about chemical prices and tariffs

The headline refers to a warning made alongside Farmers Business Network’s 2025 Ag Chemical Price Transparency Report. The report and related coverage are useful as dated market context, not as a current price list or proof that tariffs alone caused later price changes.

The 2025 report: lower prices, but wide variation

Agriculture.com reported that the 2025 report drew on more than 1,390 data points from farms in 26 states. FBN’s report says it analyzed 122 chemical products. Those are different measures, and neither figure establishes that the sample represents every U.S. farm or that submitted invoices were independently audited.

FBN said 2024 prices were down compared with prior years. John Appel, then FBN’s senior director of category management, attributed that environment in part to lower commodity prices and the market working through excess channel inventory. FBN also warned that restocking could overlap with tariff costs. That was a contemporaneous explanation and outlook, not evidence that tariffs caused every subsequent price movement.

The same report emphasized that a national or average price can conceal large differences among products, regions, and transactions. FBN reported a 211% price variation for Liberty 280 SL Herbicide and 200% for dry AMS; it said 12 analyzed products had a difference of more than 100% between their highest and lowest observed prices. The figures describe variation reported in that report, not a guaranteed saving available to any buyer.

Product Reported 2025 report figure What the figure means
Liberty 280 SL Herbicide 211% reported price variation Variation reported by FBN; it is not a current quote or a stated tariff increase.
Dry AMS 200% reported price variation Variation reported by FBN; compare equivalent product and transaction terms before drawing a price conclusion.
Dry AMS 28–60 cents per pound National price range cited in the 2025 report, not a current offer.
Atrazine 4L $12.25–$23.60 per gallon National price range cited in the 2025 report, not a current offer.

FBN’s later budget forecast

A March 10, 2026 AgroPages report said FBN’s 2026 report projected a 4%–6% increase in overall chemical budgets and described tariffs as having raised the price floor. Treat this as a secondary-reported forecast attributed to FBN—not a realized increase, a product-by-product price change, or a prediction that every farm’s bill will rise by that amount. FBN’s 2026 crop protection outlook also warned of potential price spikes for imported active ingredients including 2,4-D Ester, glyphosate, and glufosinate. An outlook identifies risk; it does not establish that a spike has occurred.

Why tariffs can affect some chemical costs more than others

Tariffs can add cost when an imported ingredient or other supply-chain input is covered by a duty. The effect on a farm’s final quote can vary with origin, product formulation, inventory already in the channel, freight, and when a retailer restocks. The 2025 report connected tariff exposure to reliance on imported active ingredients, but it did not establish the current duty applicable to each chemical, origin, and effective date.

Chemical Share reported as sourced from China
Atrazine 100%
Glyphosate 99%
Glufosinate 85%
Clethodim 75%
2,4-D 49%

These are survey-reported sourcing shares for 2024, not government trade statistics or proof of the origin of a particular product a farmer buys. FBN/Appel also cited more than 580 million kilos of ag chemicals imported into the U.S. annually; that is an attributed FBN estimate, not an independently validated official import total.

How to tell whether two quotes are actually comparable

Price differences do not necessarily mean one retailer is overcharging. FBN’s reporting notes that product and regional differences, cash versus financing terms, and transportation costs can all affect a quote. Compare like with like before using a survey range as a negotiating benchmark.

  • Customer Service: If you have any questions about the metal sign, please contact us. We will provide helpful and responsive customer service.
  • Product: Confirm the same active ingredient and an equivalent formulation, concentration, and product quantity. A brand name or ingredient alone may not make two products equivalent.
  • Unit and quantity: Convert quotes to the same unit and compare the same order size.
  • Timing and location: Record the quote date, delivery location, and expected delivery timing; a past survey range is not a current local price.
  • Freight and fees: Check whether transportation and other charges are included or billed separately.
  • Payment terms: Separate cash pricing from financing terms and account for any financing cost.
  • Rebates and discounts: Ask whether the quote assumes a rebate, its eligibility conditions, and when it is applied.

Request current written quotes from retailers using the same product, quantity, delivery, and payment assumptions. That gives you a clearer comparison than treating a broad national range as a target price.

How to plan a farm budget without treating a forecast as a certainty

Use the FBN forecast as a scenario to test against your own expected purchases, not as a blanket adjustment to every input line. For example, apply a 4%–6% scenario to the relevant chemical-budget amount to see how much additional cash it would require, while keeping your base budget tied to actual quotes and purchase plans. The forecast does not say that every product or farm will experience that increase.

  • Identify products for which a supplier has flagged import, inventory, or delivery exposure, and ask what is known about the product’s availability and quote validity.
  • Run a separate higher-cost scenario for the portion of the budget most exposed to price or supply changes; avoid applying one assumed tariff percentage to every chemical.
  • Revisit the budget when a quote expires, an order is delayed, or a supplier changes its terms.

FBN’s John Appel advised farmers in 2025 to buy early amid supply and tariff concerns. That was advice from an FBN executive at the time, not a universal purchasing rule. Early buying can reduce exposure to later availability or price changes, but it also commits cash sooner and may leave a farm holding inventory if needs, prices, or plans change. Compare the written offer, delivery terms, storage capacity, and cash-flow impact before deciding.

What the reports do—and do not—establish today

FBN lists 2026, 2025, and 2024 U.S. ag chemical price transparency reports. The 2026 material and the forecast relayed by AgroPages add later context, but they do not provide a verified current price for every product or establish exact U.S. tariff rates by chemical, country of origin, and effective date. Nor do the 2025 ranges tell a farmer what a retailer should charge now. For a purchase decision, rely on current written local quotes and confirm any tariff or origin claim with the supplier rather than inferring it from an older national report.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
