A quick bank-strength check can help a farmer ask better questions about a lender, but it cannot predict whether that bank will approve or renew a particular loan. Review the bank’s own recent FDIC filings, compare several measures over time, and treat national banking statistics as context—not a verdict on your lender.
What a bank-strength check can—and cannot—tell you
A bank’s ability to withstand losses and keep lending depends on more than one number. Capital can absorb losses; loan performance can reveal stress among borrowers; and funding measures can help show how lending relates to deposits. A useful screen considers these together and looks for changes over several reporting periods.
Call reports are periodic snapshots, not a full examination, forecast, or guarantee that a bank will continue lending. A ratio can be affected by reporting definitions, the date of the filing, and the institution’s business mix. A specific assessment requires the bank’s legal name or FDIC certificate number and its latest filings.
Where to find your bank’s filings
Use the FDIC’s BankFind Suite to locate an insured bank and review its financial reports and trends. The FDIC says the suite supports institution lookup, peer comparison, and trend analysis; its financial reporting tool includes FFIEC call reports and other reports based on quarterly data. The FDIC also lists its BankFind Suite and data tools.

Which measures to review
Capital: the loss-absorbing cushion
Capital measures indicate a bank’s capacity to absorb losses. Look at the capital ratios reported for the institution, including risk-based measures where available, and examine their direction over successive filings. The 2017 Successful Farming article highlighted Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) as one measure. Reporting schedules and definitions can change, so use the current FDIC/FFIEC interface and applicable report instructions rather than relying on an old line reference.
Past-due and nonaccrual loans: signs of borrower stress
Past-due and nonaccrual loans can indicate that borrowers are having trouble meeting obligations. Review the reported amounts in context—such as their relationship to total loans—and look for a sustained change rather than drawing a conclusion from one quarter. The mix of loans matters: a lender serving different sectors may show a different pattern from a farm-focused bank.

Loan-to-deposit ratio: a basic funding and lending view
The loan-to-deposit ratio compares total loans with total deposits. It is a simple way to see how lending relates to deposit funding, but it does not by itself establish whether a bank is safe, liquid, or likely to extend credit. Interpret it alongside other reported liquidity and funding information and the bank’s business mix.
Earnings, liquidity, and agricultural focus
Profitability can help show whether a bank is generating earnings, while liquidity and funding information add context about its capacity to meet obligations. For a farm borrower, also consider agricultural loan concentration or specialization and the conditions affecting the bank’s service area. These are comparison factors, not stand-alone pass/fail tests.

How to compare banks fairly
If you are comparing potential lenders, use the same reporting date and assess the same categories for each institution. Consider whether a metric is stable, improving, or deteriorating across multiple quarters, and use peer context where appropriate.
- Capital adequacy and its direction over time.
- Past-due and nonaccrual loan performance.
- Earnings or profitability.
- Liquidity and funding measures.
- Agricultural lending concentration or specialization, where reported or otherwise established.
Do not treat a high or low value in isolation as a verdict. A farm lender’s local borrower base, loan mix, and agricultural conditions can shape its reported results. Financial filings can help frame informed questions for a loan officer; they cannot tell you whether your particular operation will qualify for credit.

What national and historical figures do—and do not—show
The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile offers broad context, not a reading of any one bank. In its February 24, 2026 Q4 2025 account, the FDIC reported full-year 2025 industry return on assets of 1.20% and said industry capital and liquidity remained strong. It also reported a 1.56% past-due and nonaccrual rate in Q4 2025, below the pre-pandemic average cited in the statement, while noting weakness in some portfolios and elevated unrealized losses. These figures cover insured institutions overall; they do not establish the health of an individual lender or farm banks specifically. The FDIC said, “The banking industry continued to have strong capital and liquidity levels, which support lending and protect against potential losses.”
Older farm-bank statistics should be read with their dates attached. Dan Looker’s October 12, 2017 Successful Farming article reported American Bankers Association figures for 2016: 1,912 farm banks; $48.4 billion in farm-bank equity capital, up 3.7% that year; median return on assets of 1.03%; and noncurrent loans equal to 0.54% of total loans. In that account, a farm bank was defined as one lending at least one-third of its loan dollars to farmers. Those historical figures are not current benchmarks.

The same article used second-quarter 2017 call-report snapshots for five lenders with high farm-loan concentrations, including a reported 22% capital ratio for Campbell County Bank and 2.23% return on assets for State Bank of Bellingham. They illustrate how individual bank figures were discussed at the time; they should not be used to compare those banks today.
Turn the numbers into useful questions
Use the filings to prepare for a conversation rather than to substitute a ratio for a lender’s credit decision. Ask how current agricultural conditions affect the bank’s service area, what kinds of farm loans it specializes in, and how its lending practices fit your operation’s needs. A bank’s relationship with farm customers includes local knowledge and borrower relationships as well as balance-sheet measures.
