Pratik Pandey, a 35-year-old Microsoft software engineer, was found unresponsive at the company’s Mountain View, California, campus at about 2 a.m. on August 20, 2025. Relatives and people familiar with him said he had been under significant stress, working late and juggling multiple projects. But the available reporting does not establish that overwork or burnout caused his death.
What happened at Microsoft’s Mountain View campus?
Pandey reportedly entered Microsoft’s office at 1045 La Avenida Ave. during the evening of August 19, 2025. He was found unresponsive during the early morning of August 20. The Palo Alto Daily Post reported that he lived in Menlo Park. Police reportedly found no signs of suspicious activity and did not treat the death as a criminal investigation.

Who was Pratik Pandey?
Reporting described Pandey as an Indian-born software engineer who moved to the United States for school. He studied computer science in India and later earned graduate degrees in California. Before joining Microsoft in 2020, he reportedly worked at Apple and Walmart Labs.

Relatives and acquaintances said Pandey had reported considerable stress. Satish Chandra, a community leader who spoke to the Palo Alto Daily Post, said Pandey had been juggling several projects. His uncle described him as hardworking and urged technology employers to pay closer attention to workload, pressure and employee support.

The family’s message was a warning to technology companies about normalizing excessive hours. The available reporting does not show that the family made a formal legal finding that Microsoft caused Pandey’s death, nor does it establish specific claims about performance targets, compensation, resignation demands or delays in family notification.
What is known about the medical cause?
The medical information reported publicly is preliminary and inconsistent. The Palo Alto Daily Post reported that an initial assessment indicated a possible heart attack. Other contemporaneous coverage said the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s official cause remained pending.
A preliminary cardiac event is not the same as a final certified cause of death. Even a final finding involving the heart would not, by itself, prove that workplace stress or long hours caused the event. Establishing work-related causation would generally require medical evidence, evidence about the person’s work history and possibly an occupational-health or legal determination.

For that reason, it is inaccurate to say that Pandey “died of burnout.” Burnout is a workplace-health description of chronic, unmanaged job stress; it is not a substitute for a medical examiner’s cause-of-death finding.

What does the medical examiner determine?
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner investigates deaths that are sudden, medically unattended, unusual, violent or accidental, and determines both the cause and manner of death.
The county says autopsy and toxicology reports can take months. Information about requesting available records is provided through its reports and records process. The county also publishes medical-examiner data, including case status, cause and manner where available, through its full dataset and case dataset. The reviewed searches did not locate a clearly identifiable public final finding for Pandey as of August 18, 2026.

What did Microsoft say?
Contemporaneous reporting said Microsoft declined to provide a detailed public comment. A person familiar with the matter reportedly said the company was conducting its own investigation. The sources reviewed did not contain detailed public findings from that review.
There is no basis in the available reporting to say Microsoft admitted fault, that an internal review confirmed overwork, or that the company changed its policies because of this case.

For technology workers, workload can affect more than job satisfaction. Repeated late-night work can reduce sleep, increase stress and create safety risks, particularly when someone is working alone or far outside normal hours. The broader lesson is not that every sudden death after a late shift was caused by work; it is that sustained overload should be treated as a management and workplace-safety signal.

- Regularly working late to keep up with assigned projects.
- Being unable to take breaks, use vacation or disconnect without fear of consequences.
- Receiving conflicting deadlines from multiple managers.
- Experiencing persistent sleep problems, anxiety, exhaustion or physical symptoms.
- Working unusual hours alone without a clear check-in or emergency procedure.
Employees facing unsustainable workloads should document competing priorities, ask managers to rank deadlines and escalate when the workload cannot be completed safely. New or severe medical symptoms require prompt medical attention; chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting and similar emergency symptoms warrant calling emergency services rather than trying to work through them.
What managers and employers can do
- Measure late-night work and repeated weekend work instead of treating them as signs of commitment.
- Set escalation rules when staffing or deadlines make the workload unrealistic.
- Ensure workers can take breaks and leave without retaliation.
- Provide check-in procedures for unusual-hour work.
- Make employee-assistance, counseling and emergency resources easy to find.
- Investigate staffing, workload and management practices—not only an individual employee’s resilience.
These are general workplace-health measures, not conclusions about Pandey’s individual medical circumstances.

The most accurate description remains narrow: Pandey was found unresponsive at Microsoft’s Mountain View campus; relatives linked reported stress and long hours to concerns about overwork; and the available evidence does not independently establish burnout or overwork as the cause of death.
