For Fall 2025, a stylist-led roundup spotlighted loafers, clogs, retro sneakers, boat shoes, riding boots, suede, Mary Janes, animal prints and slouch boots. Runway coverage added polished derbies and brogues, distinctive sneakers, pointed or square toes and printed shoes. These are complementary fashion-editorial readings—not a single definitive ranking or a checklist of shoes everyone needs to buy.

What defined the season’s shoe trends?

The clearest practical distinction is the mood each style brings: loafers and derbies lean polished or preppy; retro sneakers are casual; riding boots create an equestrian line; suede adds softness and texture; and animal prints make a shoe a visual focal point. You can use those differences to decide whether a trend fits your wardrobe, rather than treating every category as a separate shopping requirement.

Travel + Leisure’s October 26, 2025 stylist-led roundup covers nine broad categories, while Vogue, British Vogue and ELLE offer additional runway interpretations. The publications do not present one shared ranking. Their coverage is best read as a set of seasonal styling directions, not a claim that every designer or retailer adopted the same trends.

The stylist-led Fall 2025 trend list

Loafers: a polished option with more texture

The roundup describes classic preppy loafers updated with chunky or lug soles, patent shine and autumnal colors. They can give cropped trousers, a button-down and an oversized blazer a neat finish; with a pleated skirt, they make the look feel more deliberately collegiate. Named examples in the roundup include Everlane The Modern Loafer, Clarks Neiley Pearl, Dream Pairs and Vionic Uptown Hybrid Penny Loafer. These are shopping examples, not independently tested recommendations.

Clogs: relaxed slip-ons for fall outfits

In the roundup, clogs move beyond a purely casual basic through leather, wood, metallic accents or platform soles. The suggested pairings—wide-leg jeans, midi dresses and corduroy—work because the clog’s substantial shape balances roomy or textured clothing. Consider whether the shoe’s bulk suits your proportions and how much walking you expect to do; the source does not provide comparative comfort testing.

Retro sneakers: vintage cues for everyday wear

Vintage-inspired runner shapes associated with the 1970s and 1980s are highlighted alongside gum soles, suede overlays and color blocking. They offer a casual counterpoint to a blazer or midi skirt and pair naturally with wide-leg denim. Named examples include Adidas VL Court 3.0, Asics Skyhand OG, Saucony Shadow 6000, Reebok Classic AZ and Nike Pacific Low Top. The roundup names these products but does not establish their performance or current availability.

Boat shoes: a traditionally summery shape in autumn materials

The stylist-led article proposes boat shoes for fall in materials or colors such as suede, faux fur, chocolate, navy and olive. That treatment shifts a familiar slip-on away from its conventional warm-weather feel. The roundup names Timberland Stone Street, Sperry Wells and Everlane Boat Shoe as examples.

Riding boots: a long, equestrian line

Knee-high riding boots bring a more structured, polished silhouette. The roundup emphasizes flat heels and colors including burgundy, coffee brown and black. They can sit neatly under skirts or dresses, or add a defined shaft alongside slim trousers. Examples named in the article include Sam Edelman Penny 4, Frye & Co. Kellie, London Fog Irie and Jeossy 950.

Suede: a texture that crosses shoe categories

Suede is a material direction rather than one particular silhouette in the roundup: it appears across ankle boots, flats, heels and sneakers. Its brushed surface adds texture, while fall-associated shades help it read seasonally. The source names Cole Haan Viola Skimmer and Madewell Laurel Bootie as examples. Suede’s appeal is visual; the cited coverage does not establish how any particular pair handles rain, wear or maintenance.

Mary Janes: a strap detail with room to play

The roundup presents Mary Janes as both playful and polished, with platform soles, textured materials and bolder colors among the seasonal variations. The strap makes the silhouette distinct without requiring a dramatic heel or print. Amazon Essentials Women’s Mary Jane Ballet Flat is one named example; its appearance in a shopping roundup is not evidence of testing or a current price.

Animal prints: let the shoes provide the pattern

Leopard, snakeskin, tiger and zebra details appear across different shoe types in the roundup. Because the print already draws attention, a simple outfit can let the shoes stand out; alternatively, echoing one color from the print can make a more coordinated look. The article names Lucky Step Classic Retro Gum Sole Fashion Sneakers among its examples.

Slouch boots: a softer shaft

Slouch boots have a shaft that folds rather than staying sharply structured, in suede or smooth leather. That relaxed shape contrasts with the more upright line of a riding boot, even when both are tall. The roundup names Dream Pairs knee-high pull-on boots as an example.

What runway coverage added

Other fashion publications described overlapping but distinct Fall 2025 directions. Vogue highlighted derbies and brogues, distinctive sneakers and brown suede. British Vogue covered derbies, sneakers, printed pumps, glove boots, ballet flats and high heels. ELLE discussed square toes, runway sneakers, snake prints and peep toes. These are each publication’s editorial reading of the season, not evidence of a universal consensus.

Derbies and brogues are worth considering if you want the polish of a loafer in a more lace-up, menswear-influenced shape. Pointed and square toes change the visual character of a shoe without requiring a new color or print. Printed pumps and embellished or distinctive sneakers, meanwhile, put the emphasis on the shoe itself. Choose among them by the silhouette and formality you will actually wear, not simply by how many trends you can combine.

How to choose a trend you’ll wear

Use five practical filters before buying: silhouette, material, heel height, formality and the outfits or occasions the pair needs to serve. The seasonal list offers different options, not one necessary purchase.

  • For a polished or preppy wardrobe: Start with loafers, or consider derbies and brogues if you prefer lace-ups.
  • For casual outfits: Retro sneakers bring vintage cues; clogs and boat shoes offer different slip-on alternatives.
  • For skirts and dresses: Compare the long equestrian line of riding boots with the softer shaft of slouch boots, or use Mary Janes for a shorter, strapped silhouette.
  • For texture without a bold print: Suede adds a brushed surface across several shoe types.
  • For a focal point: Animal prints, distinctive sneakers and printed pumps make the footwear more visually prominent.
  • For everyday practicality: Check heel height, fit, material care and the conditions you expect to wear the shoes in. The cited trend coverage does not provide wear tests or comparative comfort findings.

What the named products and market figures do—and don’t—show

Travel + Leisure named products such as Amazon Essentials Women’s Mary Jane Ballet Flat, Adidas VL Court 3.0 and Clarks Neiley Pearl as shopping examples. The roundup displayed prices in 2025; those figures should not be treated as current. Check the retailer listing for availability and price before making a decision, and don’t infer comfort, durability or value from a product’s inclusion in an editorial roundup.

MICAM Milano’s Fall/Winter 2025/2026 press kit includes figures of +73% for “The Modern Kitten Boot” and +2,216% for “The Fancy Penny Loafer.” The consulted passage does not state the denominator or calculation method. Those numbers therefore cannot responsibly be presented as sales growth, consumer adoption or market share.
