Facebook’s $750 Million Huntsville Data Center: What the Project Became

Facebook’s 2018 $750 million Huntsville data center announcement was the start of a larger campus. Meta now reports investment above $1.5 billion; job and community figures vary by source and project stage.

Facebook announced a $750 million data center in Huntsville, Alabama, in 2018. That figure describes the original project—not the expanded campus: Meta now reports that its Huntsville investment exceeds $1.5 billion. The project began on a 340-acre North Huntsville Industrial Park site, and later expansion plans changed both its expected size and employment figures.

Is $750 million still the total investment?

No. The $750 million amount was Facebook’s announced investment for the original project in 2018, according to the Office of Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. In 2022, Meta said expansion would bring its Huntsville investment to more than $1.5 billion; Meta’s current Huntsville location profile continues to list investment above $1.5 billion. The larger figure reflects the campus after expansion, not a revision of the 2018 announcement.

The state’s 2018 announcement also estimated an $86.25 million Alabama Jobs Act investment credit over 10 years. That was the state’s estimate of the incentive, not an independently audited measure of the project’s net economic return.

Where is the data center?

The project is in North Huntsville Industrial Park. The City of Huntsville’s June 2018 announcement identified a 340-acre site and said the city approved its purchase by Facebook project entity Starbelt LLC for $8.5 million. Those figures describe the original site transaction, not the value of the expanded campus.

How many jobs does the campus support?

The figures refer to different stages and kinds of work. Permanent operational employment should not be added to temporary construction labor or treated as interchangeable with an expansion’s incremental jobs.

Figure What it describes Source and qualification
About 100 jobs Operational jobs in the original 2018 plan The Alabama governor’s 2018 announcement said the project would create 100 jobs, with an average annual salary of $80,000.
50 jobs Jobs associated with the 2022 expansion The City of Huntsville’s 2022 description said the expansion included 50 jobs with a required annual wage of $80,000, excluding benefits.
More than 300 operational jobs Expected campus-wide operations after the expansion Meta’s 2022 announcement anticipated more than 300 operational jobs after completion. Its current location profile says 300-plus operational jobs are supported once completed.
1,200 skilled trade workers Peak construction workforce Meta’s current Huntsville profile reports this peak construction figure. It is not a count of permanent data-center employees.

The projected and company-reported job totals do not establish how many openings are available now. Current vacancies need to be checked on Meta’s live careers listings.

What local infrastructure and community benefits were reported?

Road and sewer work

Huntsville’s 2018 announcement described road improvements in connection with the project. For the 2022 expansion, the city reported a $2.8 million sewer extension, of which the company funded $2.5 million. The city also estimated an $8.1 million return to the city and school system. That is the city’s estimate; the cited announcements do not provide an independent evaluation of realized fiscal returns.

Schools and local organizations

Meta said in 2022 that it had announced two grants totaling $300,000 for local schools and STEM education. Its current Huntsville fact sheet reports more than $3.9 million in direct funding to Madison County-area schools and nonprofits since 2019. The latter is a company-reported cumulative figure; the cited materials do not include an independent accounting.

What does Meta say about energy?

Meta said in 2022 that its Huntsville data center supported 227 megawatts of new renewable energy in Alabama. Its current Huntsville fact sheet repeats that figure and says electricity use is matched with 100% clean and renewable energy. These are Meta’s reported claims. Matching electricity use with renewable energy does not mean that every hour’s physical electricity supply to the facility comes directly from a renewable source, and the cited materials do not independently audit facility-level energy use.

How to read the project’s economic claims

The official state and city announcements establish what was announced, while Meta’s materials describe company-reported campus outcomes and commitments. They are useful for understanding the project’s scale, but estimates and projections should not be mistaken for independently verified local economic results. The clearest distinctions are between the original $750 million announcement and the expanded campus total, operational jobs and peak construction labor, and reported commitments versus independently measured outcomes.
