Exploring Crypto Options Trading: What 2024 Showed

Crypto options trading in 2024 was active, but the headline volumes often quoted for the year describe activity on one exchange—not the entire global market. Crypto options are derivative contracts, not ownership of bitcoin or another coin. To assess them, understand the contract’s underlying, expiration, settlement and loss mechanics, then check whether the venue is available to you and what it costs. The figures and product announcements below are historical; they are not a recommendation to trade or a statement of today’s offers.

What crypto options are—and what they are not

A crypto option is a contract whose value is linked to a cryptocurrency, a cryptocurrency index or, in some cases, a related futures contract. The contract specifies terms such as the underlying, a strike price, an expiration and how settlement works. Those terms determine what the option can be worth and what obligations may arise for the parties to the contract.

An option is different from buying crypto on a spot exchange: the option buyer does not thereby own the underlying coins. It is also different from buying shares in a spot bitcoin or ether exchange-traded product (ETP). Investor.gov describes those spot ETPs as trusts holding the underlying assets, and warns that they have risks of their own, including tracking deviation, sponsor fees and risks in the underlying market. That bulletin concerns spot ETPs, not the registration or safety of options venues.

Calls, puts and the premium

A call gives its buyer the right, under the contract, to buy or receive value based on the underlying at the strike; a put gives its buyer the right to sell or receive value based on the underlying at the strike. The buyer pays a premium. Whether an option is valuable at expiration depends on the relationship between the underlying’s value and the strike, as well as the contract’s settlement terms.

For a standard purchased option, the buyer’s direct option loss is generally limited to the premium paid, plus transaction costs, if the option expires without value. A short option is a different position: its obligations and potential loss depend on the contract and margin rules and can be substantial. A margined futures account may also face losses beyond its initial deposit. Do not assume that every option position has the same risk as a purchased option, or that every contract settles in the same way.

What the reported 2024 activity does—and does not—show

Deribit’s January 22, 2025 year-end announcement reported the following exchange-level figures. These are Deribit’s own reported statistics, not an independently consolidated global market total.

  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Measure Reported figure Scope and attribution
Options notional volume in 2024 $743 billion, up 99% year over year Deribit-reported total options notional trading volume for its platform in 2024.
Options notional volume in Q4 2024 $243 billion Deribit said this was its best quarter of 2024 for options.
Open interest on November 28, 2024 More than $48 billion Deribit-reported platform open interest; the company said most of its notional open interest was in BTC options.

Notional volume describes the stated value of contracts traded; it is not the amount traders paid in premiums, their profits, or the amount of cash exchanged. Open interest is a snapshot of outstanding contracts, not trading volume. Neither set of figures establishes the size of the entire crypto options market.

In the same announcement, Deribit CEO Luuk Strijers attributed increased activity, particularly in Q4, to institutional optimism around the US presidential election and the subsequent Bitcoin rally above $100,000. That is the CEO’s explanation of activity on Deribit, not proof that those factors caused market-wide growth.

How venue and contract differences affect a comparison

A venue comparison is meaningful only when the products and access rules are comparable. CME Group’s current cryptocurrency futures and options fact card describes its market as CFTC-regulated and its contracts as index-based and cash-settled. The fact card lists options on Bitcoin, Ether and Solana, with larger and Micro contract sizes. Deribit describes itself as a centralized derivatives venue and says it is unavailable in the United States and other restricted countries. That statement does not establish availability in every other country.

Comparison point CME Group Deribit
Venue description in the cited material CME describes its cryptocurrency futures and options market as CFTC-regulated. Deribit describes a centralized derivatives venue.
Options underlyings listed in the current fact card or announcement Bitcoin, Ether and Solana, according to CME’s current fact card. BTC options are identified in Deribit’s report as the majority of its notional open interest on November 28, 2024; the announcement does not provide a complete current listing.
Contract details Fact card describes index-based, cash-settled contracts and larger and Micro sizes. Check live specifications for exact contract sizes and expirations. Exact current contract sizes, expirations and settlement terms are not stated in the cited year-end announcement.
Location and eligibility Check current CME product and account eligibility for your location; the fact card does not establish eligibility for every customer. Deribit says it is unavailable in the United States and other restricted countries; availability elsewhere must be checked against its current terms.
Comparable current fees and liquidity Not stated in the cited fact card. Not stated in the cited year-end announcement.

This is not a ranking. Before comparing venues, check your jurisdiction and account eligibility, then compare the same underlying and contract form. Review expiration schedules, contract size, exercise and settlement rules, margin requirements, fees, bid-ask spreads, market depth and open interest using current, comparable information. A venue’s regulatory description does not by itself establish that every product or customer relationship has the same regulatory treatment.

What changed during 2024—and what is now only historical

CME’s January 2024 newsletter announced Monday-to-Friday weekly Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options that were listed early on a one-time basis for contracts expiring from April 1 through April 30, 2024. The newsletter also announced a 50% per-contract reduction in exchange trading fees on options through July 31, 2024. Those were dated listings and a time-limited fee promotion; they should not be treated as current expirations or pricing.

CME’s currently available fact card also shows nearly $6.8 trillion in cumulative cryptocurrency futures and options notional volume since launch. That is a cumulative figure shown on the current fact card, not a 2024-only statistic, so it cannot be compared directly with Deribit’s 2024 options-only volume.

Risks to understand before considering a position

The CFTC customer advisory says virtual-currency prices are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and that price moves can affect futures and options. It warns that leverage in futures can magnify both gains and losses; customers in margined futures accounts may have to add margin or close positions and may lose more than their initial investment. The advisory states: “However, like all futures products, speculating in these markets should be considered a high-risk transaction.” That futures-account warning should not be applied indiscriminately to every option position: assess the exact contract, whether you are buying or writing the option, and its margin and settlement rules.

  • Price and volatility risk: A sharp move, or a change in expected volatility, can change an option’s value. A position may lose value even if the underlying moves in the direction anticipated, depending on the strike, time remaining and premium paid.
  • Leverage and liquidation: If the position is margined, the venue’s collateral and liquidation rules matter. Read them before trading; a margin call or forced close can occur at an unfavorable time.
  • Venue and market risk: The CFTC warns about unregulated or unsupervised cash-market platforms, manipulation, cyber risks and fraud. Its advisory is general investor guidance, not a product-specific legal determination.
  • Liquidity and execution: A quoted price does not guarantee that a trade can be opened or closed at that level. Bid-ask spreads, market depth and open interest should be checked for the particular contract and time.
  • Contract and settlement risk: Confirm the underlying, multiplier, expiration, exercise method, settlement currency and final settlement process in the official contract specifications. A contract linked to futures is not necessarily equivalent to one linked directly to a coin or index.
  • Custody and exposure distinctions: Cash-settled derivatives do not necessarily require a personal crypto wallet, but that does not eliminate exchange, counterparty or operational risks. Spot ETP risks, including tracking and sponsor fees, are separate from options risks.

The CFTC advises customers to check whether a seller of virtual-currency futures or options is registered with the CFTC. Regulatory status and legal availability depend on the product and jurisdiction, so verify the relevant official information rather than inferring approval from a venue’s branding.
